Grassroots Campaigns is hiring recent college graduates to run our campaign offices across the country.

Background

Grassroots Campaigns is running a state-of-the art voter mobilization effort in 2012 to keep the White House and get more progressive candidates intro office. Building on our experience with ground-breaking get-out-the-vote efforts in 2004, 2006 and 2008 we will be teaming up with some of the leading progressive groups to continue the electoral success of 2008.

Job Responsibilities

Direct: Run voter persuasion, get-out-the vote, and volunteer organizing campaigns to ensure progressive candidates are in office.

Recruitment: Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community. Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.

Staff Management: Train volunteers and paid staff in effective get-out-the-vote skills, including door-to-door voter persuasion and mobilization. Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders. Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.

Canvassing: Canvass in the field for four-six days per week, to train new and experienced staff.

Qualifications

Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions.

Expectations

Positions have a minimum commitment through the election. Campaign hours can run 80-100 hours per week, including work on weekends. Staff will need to be ready to go to a battleground state.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary for Assistant Campaign Directors begins at $24,000. Staff may opt into our health care plan (PPO). Paid training, vacation and sick days are included; student loan assistance is available.

Training

Staff will receive on-going training and support from regional and local senior campaign staff.

... The first problem is the pay, which has two elements. First canvassers must meet quotas for the amount of donations they solicit, quotas which are high and ambiguous. After meeting quota, canvassers are paid a percentage of the donations they solicit, usually 30 percent. This means canvassers could earn great money if they get a large amount of donations – or they could make nothing at all.

“The $500-600 a week is definitely slanted, but it's not quite a lie,” said Greg Bloom, who worked as a canvass director for Grassroots Campaigns in 2004. “A canvasser takes home 30 percent of what they raise, and in 2004 in the big cities like San Diego, people could work six days a week and raise a thousand or more in a day. There were usually only one or two people in an office with that kind of canvassing talent; everyone else would scrape to make the advertised range.

Polls across the country show Democrats surging ahead or pulling even with Republicans. Election forecasters are talking about a Democratic sweep — the White House, the Senate, and the House.

Simply put, we’re going to make big, big gains this year — and Republicans are panicking. According to Politico, Republican incumbents just threw another $3.2 million to the NRCC to try to stop the Democratic momentum.

This is our shot to take back the House and put an end to John Boehner’s wing-nut agenda. But we’ll lose that shot unless we have the resources to win.

In FL-26, DFA-endorsed Joe Garcia is leading corrupt Republican Rep. David Rivera by anywhere from seven to nine points, according to polls.

Even in CA-36 — a race that Republicans never thought would be competitive — Dean Dozen candidate Dr. Raul Ruiz is dead-even with longtime incumbent Republican Mary Bono Mack.

Throughout that time, she also worked with the founders of Ben & Jerry's, Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities and TrueMajority.
