It’s Hard Enough to Be a Fat Kid Without the Government Telling You You’re an Epidemic

Growing up, I was always fat. Not as fat as I am now, but never, ever skinny. Never small. I was tall and athletic and big—I knocked stuff over, I blocked people's views, I was always in the way. Even if they made fashionable clothes in my size (which they didn't—OOH, MORE LOUD-PATTERNED SMOCKS, PLEASE), I didn't know how to make anything look good on my body. I was the girl the mean kids would target with the old, "See that guy over there? He likes you" gag. Good one, bros! In case you don't get it, the punchline is that I'm fat. So obviously he didn't like me—it would be against all the laws of the universe. At the same time, though, I played three sports, I was active and healthy, I was good at school, I was funny, and I was popular. I was a happy kid. And I was still miserable. Because that's what fat does.

I cannot even imagine being that same fat kid in 2012—having to put up with all the misery and the shame and the tunics (SO MANY TUNICS), along with the added pain of knowing that the government officially considers you an epidemic. You're a "problem" that needs to be "fixed." Newscasters with knitted brows talk about you in the abstract like your butt is a crime wave or a natural disaster; they show bodies that look like yours with their heads chopped off; they tell you that this body you have—the one that grew around you out of nowhere, that you're just getting used to—is bankrupting the nation and mowing down future generations like tuberculosis. Tu-pork-ulosis. Whatever.

It's even worse when you know that this is the butt telling you to slim down.

“they tell you that this body you have—the one that grew around you out of nowhere”

Sorry, but bodies don’t grow out of thin air. That body grew out of the food you put in your mouth.

Glad to hear it!

I’m only about 10-12 pounds overweight, but I fight like the dickens to keep the weight off.

Inspiring story - good for her.

But you woouldn't be paying any higher premiums for health insurance if the government got out of the restriction business and insurers could sell across state lines, or make whatever combination of healthcare products fit a specific market, or compete based on consumer demands instead of collectivist political theories that killed 200 million in the last century.

Of course, life would also be easier for you if you understood how destructive high fructose corn syrup is t people trying to eat healthily, or the creation of wholesale weight gain and illness by using fast yeast in virtually all commercial bakeries, or allowing pharmaceutical companies to write the laws concerning what people may learn about what the government is forcing them to be vaccinated with, or restricted to buy in grocery stores.

But hey, I understand, bumper-sticker mentality is easy, and after all, you know that pumped up feeling you get after working out at the gym?

It means you're superior.

Uuum no. Some people get up the discipline and make a lifestyle change=eating healthy and going to the gym.

I can care less what you eat and what you stuff in your mouth..I just don't want to pay for your bad eating habits.

uuum no again. My gf works in a hospital. They just had to put in a high bed MRI at big$$$ for 400-600 lbs patients and also over the last few years upgraded all the hospital beds for 400+ lb patients. Just as we all pay for the physical therapy cost today of obese patients which is rampant..stores having to have fleets of motorized scooters. I could go on and on We all pay for that...

“Sorry, but bodies don’t grow out of thin air. That body grew out of the food you put in your mouth.”

Your right is so much as what you eat does matter... However, you need to realize that much of the mass that comprises your body indeed does come from thin air... Or air anyway. When fuel is oxidized in your cells, the oxygen part does indeed come from thin air.

Also, off topic a bit, but something most people don’t realize... When a tree grows, much of the mass of the tree is carbon. Where do you think the carbon comes from. (hint - it’s not out of the soil) The carbon comes from the air... so does much of the nitrogen. Most of the mass of the tree is from the atmosphere.

uuum no, you addressed NONE of the mechanics of WHY "we all pay for that," let alone WHY "that" is happening.

But hey, your girlfriend SAW something. Well hell, ain't THAT special!

You're as simple as you sound - you don't mind millions paying with their lives for the bad thinking habits you've stuffed into what passes for your brain about economics, politics, law, and freedom.

Crawl back to DU where you belong, you liberal moron.

And what’s your bad habit? Do you run for 18 miles every morning so that I have to pay for your bad knees and hips? Or your heart attack after the 17th mile?

Where the hell do you live that your local hospital is loaded up with 600 pound patients???

...and I’m sure your poor girlfriend is thrilled that you put up those “before” photos. She looks very pretty (seriously) and you shouldn’t have posted those.

I think you’ve got the cart before the horse here. The store provided these carts to get the business of the people who need them. The investment is a business decision on their part. The same goes with the extra large MRI machines at the hospital.

I know enough not to overload my body and blow out my knees and overdo excercise...as for the 600 lb MRI most hospitals are going that route (having to upgrade equipment for obese pateints.

Btw she is not my gf(the woman in the picture)don't even know her but she post on a fitness site I visit.
