Romney's New Strategy

Romney’s New Strategy

By Stanley Kurtz

September 25, 2012 9:59 P.M. Comments0

By kicking off his Ohio bus tour with an unusually blunt attack on Obama’s big-government philosophy, Mitt Romney appears to have adopted a new strategy. Romney described Obama’s vision of government as “entirely foreign to anything this nation has ever known.” He decried ”a larger government, taking more and more, intruding in your relationship with your doctor, investing, so to speak, in companies, picking winners and losers, or in his case, losers.” Then came the biggest applause line: “That is not the America I know. That is not the America that built Ohio.”

Romney’s attacks on Obama’s 1998 remarks about redistribution could have been dismissed as an effort to divert attention from the 47 percent flap. Today’s Ohio campaign-speech appears to signal a more serious pivot. This is how Romney has chosen to open his tour of the ultimate battleground state. Gone is Obama the likable guy in over his head. Now we have Obama the transformative ideologue. You don’t need to screen clips from 2016, or even bring up European social democracy, to make the point.

Romney’s earlier strategy of depending on reminders of Obama’s failed economic stewardship to gently wean voters away from Obama wasn’t crazy. Why alienate that thin sliver of Obama-sympathetic undecideds by making them feel like fools for having supported the president in the first place? Yet that framing made the election a choice between blaming Obama for our economic troubles or cutting him some slack for having been handed such a bad situation to begin with.

This new strategy changes things. By highlighting Obama’s transformative policies, Romney gives voters a way to make sense of Obama’s role in our economic woes. This is how the 2010 election was won.

I don’t think this is “Romney’s New Strategy” at all. He’s carefully planned the entire campaign schedule and this escalation of the ideological element was planned for right now. The undecideds are finally start to pay attention — Labor Day is gone, the Conventions are behind us, the kids are back in school. Now is the time to take the battle to Obastard.

Well Mitts ‘killing Obama with praise’ strategy wasn’t working when O was attacking MRs character for months.

Agreed.

Media gets to cover for their “doesn’t want it” act.

Disagree respectfully.

I don’t think he ever expected to fall behind like this. He wanted to play it safe and coast to victory.

He underestimated the impact of all the June ads he let run unanswered, and he underestimated the power of a crippled MSM to continue to inflict damage on him.

He should have done this months ago, but he was oblivious to the damage being done. Hope it isn’t too late to turn it around.

I agree this is a good strategy - start off slow, get folks use to the idea of getting rid of Obama - ie talk to the center left and move to the right - bring them along with you.

I think he’ll catch up with the conservatives & Tea Party folks.

I think he’s got this choreographed - I hope this stuff in the middle east is coincidence..... I think I heard he and Bibi have been buds for years.

Oooooo! That's tough! That will really counter the Obama ads showing Romney killing blacks and Latinos and then selling their organs to old white billionaires. /S

Just so long as he doesn’t go all McCain on us, he has a chance to win this thing.

RE :”the tax and spend, grandaddy of bambamcare actually said this ??? with a straight, used car saleman face ???

Look gilb, we ALL voted against Romney in the primary but now that he is the candidate he is the only one who can defeat Obama and save us from mass destruction.
So NOW we must ALL support him, we must defend him, we must lie for him if need be, If Romney is caught on tape saying one thing he didnt want us to hear and then later says it was really something else he said we must repeat his explanation as if we heard that on the tape and say the tape was edited.

Nothing less than the survival of the human race is at risk here. Are you with us? DA-Da-DA America-America!

:)

Here's hoping we can look for some CONSTANT consistency.

I've see flashes of this now and then BUT he doesn't keep constant heat on Obozo.

Let's hope he's gonna finally "put the pedal to the metal" from now until NOV 6th.

Everyone may not love Romney as a true die hard conservative. But Romney is a very smart man. Successful in business and in politics. I think he has had a plan from the very beginning. It was not going to be a traditional campaign. Not herky jerky to daily events or attacks.

Introduce himself at the convention. Tell the 2008 Obama voters, its OK to feel bad about your vote. And now, he is racheting up the attacks. We saw it in primary. He got pressed my Newt in SC, and attacked him big time going into FLA, and the primary was effectively over.

I also believe they are playing a big swing vote and voter turnout game. I think R&R don’t believe ads are very effective in the end. Social media and personal touch. I mean it is amazing the millions of voters Romney’s organization has contacted the last couple of months.

We will know on Nov 6th (hopefully) if this strategy works. But Mitt is a smart, strategic and steady leader.
