NAACP claims discriminatory admission practices at [New York] city's elite high schools
New York Daily News ^ | SEPTEMBER 26, 2012 | BEN CHAPMAN

The NAACP has filed a bombshell complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, alleging discriminatory admission practices at the city’s elite high schools.

In a blistering document delivered to the feds Thursday morning, the NAACP accused the city of barring black and Latino students from eight of its “best public schools,” including Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, where only 1% of students are black. “Black and Latino students don’t see opportunity at places like Stuyvesant because of the admissions process,” said NAACP attorney Rachel Kleinman. “It’s not fair and it’s bad policy.”

The city’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is the only method that is used to judge students for admission to the eight elite high schools.

The NAACP believes the grueling exam is unfair to black and Latino students because they are denied admission “at rates far higher than other racial groups.” Nearly 31% of white students and 35% of Asian students who take the test are offered seats at the top schools, compared with just 5% of black students and 6.7% of Latinos.

The NAACP doesn’t specify how the test discriminates against blacks and Latinos, but Kleinman said those students may lack tutoring and other resources. Education officials hit back against the NAACP’s complaint, arguing the test is color-blind.

Stuyvesant is, what, about 80% Asian? I went to a football game there a few weeks ago. 95% of their cheerleaders were Asian.

If you can’t pass the exam then you don’t belong in the school. They can’t dumb everything down just so you feel included a-holes.

I note that you did not mention the players or the crowd.

Crowd? Not much of one. A few parents. Didn’t get a real good look at the players. They were on the field with helmets. I had to take off at halftime. Regardless, compared to the percent of the overall population, Asians are overrepresented in that school and all the other top schools in the city.

I presume that all these unfairly-rejected black students have performed wonderfully at the second-choice schools where they ended up, huh?

The Obama admin is using similar legal theories in housing and employment “discrimination” cases - it’s called “disparate impact” theory; meaning the policy is wrong NOT because anyone was directly, intentionally discriminated against, but simply because it does not produce “demographically diverse results”.

In other words “anti-discrimination policies” must not merely oppose discrimination, they may in fact need to discriminate in order to produce “non-discriminatory results” in the “demographic dispersement” of “equal justice”.

This leads to a perpetually balkanized society where “rights” and “economic justice” are group rights more than individual rights and where some individuals may in fact be discriminated against in order that each demograhic group receives “their fair share”. Just think of the politics of Lebanon.

I have 9 words:

Can't Pass The Test, Can't Get In. Tough Sh*t.

Life is a bitch, especially when all the baby-daddies take off and leave mom to work to feed those babies.

Just out of curiosity, I noticed your use of "over represented", and wondered if you truly believe in racial quotas and affirmative action or if it was just a slip.

I guess you really meant to say something that meant they were better disciplined, had good study habits, and involved caring parents that lead them to objectively outperform other minority groups. Qualities I supposed are admired by conservatives.

Understood. I'll put it in different terms. I am a New York City cop so I'll give you these stats. Blacks and Hispanics in NYC make up over 97% of perpetrators of reported crime. They do not make up 97% of the population of NYC.

So they are over represented in the crime statistics. The same way Asians are over represented in the best schools. I'm talking simple percentages, not the reasons for it.

So Asians are admitted at a rate 10x their “proportion” and that too makes the process “unfair”

I mean, it’s gotta be.....doesn’t the NCAA know Asians dominate urban boards of education? They just have to be writing the admissions rules to “favor their own”

I know someone who in the last decade was teaching at Harvard, where she was flat out told she couldn’t flunk any black student and low grades were discouraged.

What about the Elder Principle? Larry Elder once went to the Main Library in downtown Los Angeles, where self-segregation was pointed and visible: outside the building, on the plaza and steps, were black kids, breakdancing to the latest rap. Inside we’re Asian kids, reading and studying. Nothing else need be said.
