iOS 6 device users report baffling range of Wi-Fi problems
MacWorld-UK ^ | 27 Sept 2012 | John Cox

Some number of iPhone and iPad users upgrading to iOS 6 are reporting a range of Wi-Fi problems, as are some iPhone 5 users. The solutions, when there are any, seems as baffling as the problems.

The continuing posts at Apple's tech support site and at online forums show users with existing iPhone and iPads frustrated by a flurry of different problems, including a "grayed out" Wi-Fi option, dropped connections, slow connection speeds, and having to connect manually to a Wi-Fi access point. Separately, there are posts by some owners of the new iPhone 5, released last Friday, also about Wi-Fi problems.

Confusedly, these are problems that are unrelated to the Wi-Fi glitch last week when iOS 6 was first released. In that situation, the iPhone or iPad pings an Apple Website to determine if the device is on a hotel or airport Wi-Fi network and needs a network "terms of agreement" page. That webpage was temporarily offline, but its absence prevented a lot of users from getting Wi-Fi access for a few hours. But it was quickly fixed.

Because of the nature of online postings, it's difficult to see patterns or to gain a sense of how widespread these problems are. When queried last Friday, an Apple PR spokesman replied via email "Thanks for bringing this to my attention." Two follow-up emails asking for a statement from Apple have not been acknowledged by either of two PR persons contacted.

Just got the notice to update my iPod Touch to iOS 6. Having second thoughts about doing it. Should I wait?

Definitely wait. I too am having all kinds of problems with Wi-Fi including my kids. My wife has not yet upgraded to iOS 6 and she is happy!

I would wait.

Mac’s have had that problem since the Macbook G4 days.

My iPad (MC705LL) was kinda slow, compared to my iPhone 4s, before the update to iOS 6. It’s still slow, so I’m not noticing much there.

Battery life seems a bit iffy, again. More so on my phone than the iPad. Could be some of the new stuff that keeps running in the back ground. After the last update, I know I had to go back in and shut off a lot of stuff I don’t use. Mostly Push and Location services. That’s about the only way to maintain decent battery life...

I just wish the Calendar on the iPhone didn’t insist on downloading all the events from Facebook.

That’s what I’m looking at as well-I have an archaic Samsung Solstice and have had it for 3-4 years...not one problem with it-ever.

I have had sooo my problems downloading stuff from iTunes; I continually get someone else’s music (not good stuff either even if it is free) and sometimes can’t play certain songs that I bought.
Not once has Cust Serv ever addressed the fact I am getting someone else’s stuff and it took them 2 months just to fix my own songs.

Can’t imagine using Apple daily for my business communications...

Suzy

I’m in No Man’s Land.

I’ve had an ongoing problem with album and podcast art becoming scrambled and the only way to fix it is to do a restore of the phone. Time consuming but it worked.

However...a restore installs the latest OS and in this case I want nothing to do with iOS 6, especially as consumers are treated like cannon fodder in the Google/Apple War Of The Corporate Egos.

So in order to stay on 5.x I have to deal with generic and/or mismatched art.

More and more people are offering unsolicited advice to go with Android and Apple may just push me there.

A co-worker just bought a new iPhone 5. Had numerous connectivity problems. He took the phone back, Apple couldn’t fix it in the store, and had to replace it. His replacement phone is doing the same thing. No signal dropped calls.

Me too. Our 3 iphones have constantly dropped in and out of wifi for at least a year. My blackberry has no problems as well as the ipad and laptop. The first time one of my kids goes over the data plan, I will be having a discussion with ATT.

I did a quick google search for you on “stop facebook notifications on iphone”, there seems to be more than a few little “offs” you have to set.

I updated my iphone 3GS and while mail has been a bit screwy I had problems before and was needing to redo my email addy’s and servers.
I got around the loss of google maps by going to google maps in safari and conveniently letting google maps put the maps icon on home screen lol
I don’t get turn by turn on my phone (only for 4S and later) but discovered the free MapQuest app does vocal turn by turn. another win.
iphone 5 is too big to fit in my pocket or leather case so I won’t be getting it.
I could possibly go for a “mini” ipad for in purse. I really miss my tungsten E2 which was awesome because I could write on it with stylus and it had alot of great apps. I would love for a small tablet like that. ipad is just too big to carry around (and having to have adapter for sd/usb is just ridiculous).
I really really liked my Evo but just didn’t get any signal at work with Sprint after moved to FL, and with other family on iphone it made more sense to go that way.

Poor programming. Instead of writing real, bomb proof code, today’s programmers play footsie with java toys and other stacked up nightmares just waiting to fail.

The wife’s iPad 1 and iPad 3 have had consistent connection problems that sometimes drive her to distraction. Fortunately, she has learned that her Win7 PC at work and her notepad laptop at home are still the way to go. Nowdays she uses the iPad for mostly entertainment and leaves the grunt work to real computers and real smartphones.

I was having that problem before the upgrade.

I have not upgraded to IOS6 on my Iphone 4S but have noticed in the last 4- 6 weeks the dropping of WiFi in my house. This is not an issue I had previously experienced. Also I have to manual connect to Wifi may times at the house.

Another interesting bug is that I have two WiFi networks at the house, and the Iphone has stopped connecting to one (the non Apple network).
