“Another Broken Promise, Mr. President?” (That should be Romney's "There you go again" debate line)
Fox News ^ | 09/29/2012 | David Asman

Right now, President Obama and Mitt Romney are looking for the one line that will stand out as the defining line of the debate, a line that encapsulates the candidate’s reason for running and all his frustrations with the other guy. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a solution for the nation’s problems. But it does have to immediately resonate with voters.

In 1980, the quip that stood out was challenger Ronald Reagan’s dismissive, “There you go again...” to President Carter. Folks knew exactly what Reagan meant: that we had seen through Carter’s attempts to attack Reagan’s supposedly “radical tendencies” as a dodge to distract voters from Carter’s responsibility for an ever-weakening America.

This time around it’s a safe bet that President Obama will try out another quip to further characterize Romney as an out-of-touch millionaire. It’s much less clear what quip the Romney team is looking for. His campaign has suffered from lack of clarity all along. The debates would be the perfect moment to fix on one. And frankly, we think we have one, based on the president’s own record.

During the debate on Wednesday night, President Obama will undoubtedly be asked to defend his record. Mr. Romney will be asked to respond. When he does, Romney should wait a beat -- as Ronald Reagan knew how to do so well -- and ask: “Another broken promise, Mr. President?”

Most Americans need to be reminded of just how many promises this president has broken. When you truly believe the government can fix almost anything, you’re bound to promise much more than can be fulfilled. Thus, Romney has a rich field to plow. The only problem will be brevity, because there are so many examples. But allow me to mention a few, each one of which could be condensed and followed by the refrain: “Another broken promise, Mr. President?”

*The stimulus will prevent unemployment from rising above 8%, and will fall to 5.6% by 2012.

Pathetic, indeed, that we are reduced to “sound bite strategies” in evaluating and deciding the future of mankind.

Here are other broken promises Romney can use in the debates (HIT HIM HARD MAN, WITH HIS OWN WORDS):

*Solyndra, “leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future

*”I’m committed to an all-of-the-above energy program.” (REALLY? Where’s the Keystone Pipeline? Why are you banning drilling in our coast but giving money to Brazil to drill theirs?)

* Obamacare, which “…won’t add another dime to the deficit.”

*”Health premiums will go down $2,500 by the end of my first term.”

*Under Obamacare “you will keep your health insurance. This law will only make it more secure and more affordable.”

* “My goal is to strengthen and preserve Medicare.”

“Since my election…you’re starting to see some restoration of America’s standing in the world.” (TIME TO DREDGE UP HIS “WHEN I HAVE A SECOND TERM, I CAN BE MORE FLEXIBLE” STATEMENT CAUGHT ON MIC TO MEDVEDEV)

*”If I don’t fix the economy in three years, then I’ll be a one-term president. “

(Add yours here, I’m sure there is abundant material)

Not if we back the sound bite with facts. There are too many Obama broken promises that harm this country for Romney not to dredge them up.

Romney has got to double down and understand what he's facing. Romney does not seem to realize the scope and dimension of the changing contemporary culture---the nature of the very voters he's trying to get to elect him.

B/c politicians win only by appealing to the popular culture.

Romney has been storing up a litany of impressive credentials----ready to unveil them in his 2012 shot at the presidency. He's real proud of being elected governor, of becoming a succesful businessman, of making the Olympics profitable, of having a succesful dad who ran for president.

Unfortunately, Romney grew up in a time when America was a "meritocracy"---when hard work and achievement were lauded and achievers rose to even greater success. That no longer applies. Even the fact that he looks presidential works against him.

Obama----w/ a wide streak of anti-Americanism in him that drives his actions----opened the floodgates and allowed the incipient cultural infection to burgeon.

Obama has committed every cardinal sin a politician can commit---did everything wrong. He ran up insurmountable deficits and concocted wealth redistribution scams that insure a bankrupt nation in the near future. He's sucked up to every two-bit enemy of America that wants to blow us all up.

He cuts and runs and makes excuses when an American ambassador and three other Americans are killed at our consulate. From the getgo, the Obama admin purposely and persistently misstated what had happened and the motives and identity of the murderers.

While Obama's numbers in swing states rose, the president, secy of state, UN ambassador and White House press spokesman all insisted that the murderous attack was the outgrowth of a protest over a video---when the facts indicate otherwise---as the 100 million-strong Muslim World united in terror against America.

In Obama's America, the lowest common denominator prevails. Misfits, ne'er-do-wells, whiners---all have exalted status---all empowered by the Obama presidency.

Need more proof?

Romney got in trouble for appearing to dismiss "47% loser voting bloc"--- jobless, govt-dependent bums who evade taxes.

==========================================

THIS JUST IN Obama's winning campaign slogan:

"The world owes you a living...no matter how lazy, dumb, slovenly, drunk, drug-addicted...no matter how many convictions for distribution/possesion, armed robbery, domestic violence, murder and mayhem, no matter how many screwups, jobs lost, kids abandoned."

"The world owes you a living and Obama's gonna make sure US taxpayers pay for it."

“Another broken promise, Mr. President?”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Actually, I like it - a lot.

Like a hit record, Romney needs a hook and a theme around which to build his narrative.

It’s fresh, it’s short, it’s true, and it’s effective.

The voting electorate needs this as a conversation starter. You can’t get too wonky right off the bat, or it will turn off your audience. It can lead to all sorts of good discussion, and it ties it all together.

I really like it.

No. Asking such a question is passive and whiny. Who cares that Obama breaks his promises? I certainly don’t- the original promises are repugnant.

RE: the original promises are repugnant.

Not all of them.

How can the promise of bringing down Medicare cost and unemployment to 5% be repugnant... IT IS HOW HE INTENDED TO DO IT (which never works) that are repugnant.

The goal is great, the means by which he wants to reach the goal is totally unrealistic. Socialism and redistribution do not work.

Heh——and to think just a few short Reagan years ago-—all of those Obamanations would have cooked the goose of any politician.

Now Obama’s “the man of the people.”

I bet that Barry can't even balance his own checking account.

It is sad that there must be “sound bite strategies” - but a fact of life. While a judicial intern for the US Claims Court, I attended a lunch where Rita Braver, then Whitehouse Correspondent for CBS news, spoke of the difficulty of distilling legal issues (as a non-lawyer) to very limited air time - 30 to 90 seconds. Both sides (and the other side including the news media) will do everything they can to make complex subjects appear simple and understandable, with their viewpoint more persuasive. Best to be prepared with your own synopsis of the situation than to let them characterize your opinion. Just think of the run they've made with the 47% quote - taken out of the full context of the private conversation regarding political strategy and how to focus the campaign for most effective results. Romney has to build his answers to create soundbites that convey memorable messages. Unfortunately the persuadable will be swayed by such soundbites - just a fact of life - so we have to be better than the opposition at creating them.

Fair enough, not all of the stated goals were repugnant.

However, I think I had a clear idea of what he would try to do to achieve his stated goals.

Fortunately, his incompetence as a leader has neutralized at least some of his ambitions.

Unfortunately enough people don’t care about the broken promises to pay attention.

More effective would be to compile a list of short and ugly facts related to Obama and his leadership - in short bursts because most of this country has the attention span of a toddler. These might include the unemployment rate, the number of houses in foreclosre, the number of jobs sent overseas, the number of annual abortions, etc. - I’m sure Freepers could come up with a great list - also include records not disclosed (college transcripts, birth certificate, voluntarily retracted law degree, social security number, amount taxpayers paid for Michelle’s vacations - just get all these facts lined up and repeat them day in and day out until the election.
