NJ SCHOOL DISTRICT CUTS PORTIONS FOR STUDENTS $3 BEHIND ON LUNCH PAYMENT
Big Government ^ | September 29, 2012

It’s bad enough that school children across the nation are going hungry on the skimpy portions offered through the Michelle Obama lunch menu.

At the Tewksbury school district in New Jersey, children who fall $3.10 behind on their food payments get one hard-boiled egg, a package of crackers and a carton of milk for lunch.

The Tewksbury district consists of two schools, one for grades K-4 and one for grades 5-8. Lunches at the school cost $2.40 per day. That means children are only allowed to fall one day behind in their lunch payments before getting stuck with the egg special.

The lunches at Tewksbury, like most in schools across the nation, are subsidized by the federal government. Frankly, we’re confused. We thought the feds provide low-cost school lunches because many children come from impoverished homes where the food budget is tight, or from homes where meals are not prepared on a regular basis. The government wants to make sure every kid receives proper nutrition and the dignity that comes with eating a full lunch with classmates. But at Tewksbury, kids who fall a day behind in their payments are left to gnaw on hard-boiled eggs while their friends eat the full serving on the menu. Apparently school officials are willing to humiliate children into coughing up three dollars and ten cents.

Is that all it takes to not get the government approved lunch?

Well then, I know what to do.

” one hard-boiled egg, a package of crackers and a carton of milk for lunch....”

That sounds better than the lunch Moochelle Obama is forcing kids to eat.

Pass the salt and pepper, please.

I don't why any of this is a big deal. Have Mom, if she cares these days, provide a brown bag with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Oh.... Maybe a baloney sandwich, they were good too. Tell the school to hell with your lunches.

Oh wait.... On second thought I guess the problem is since the feds have been subsidizing lunch at school the money for the kids food has been allocated for...ummmmm? Cell phones? Oh wait! They are free. Oh hell, I don't know!

No, being an SOB is a side issue.

What is it all about?

It is about MONEY. The local school board is so desperate for money that they are willing to humiliate elementary aged children.

BTW - do you think that the same school board is willing to credit the children with the differences between what it costs them to serve a hard boiled egg, a package of crackers, and some milk and what our Federal Tax dollars pay them for the child's meal?

Of course not! It would take too much ....(time? money? effort? responsibility? real caring?) to do so.

I’d switch the package of crackers to a cut up raw carrot. It’s one of my weekend lunches to eat an egg and a carrot.

Would these kids have to fall behind at all if their parents sent their lunches with them? Our son HATED cafeteria food and it cut into his “eating time” I don’t think he bought more than 10 lunches his whole time in school.

That happened to my youngest once here in Germantown Elementary. He got a cheese sandwich. We look at the menu and give him the choice of brown bag or the caf. It’s about 50/50. Anyway, he forgot to give us the slip that his account was low and got to munch a cheese sandwich while the crowd that never contributed anything for generations ate their free lunch. He learned a lesson that day, moreso than us.

This does not apply to students receiving free lunches...only those who are paying full price!! So the reality is if you don't pay for it you don't get it!!!In inter cities schools the free lunch program is close to 100%

Kinda punches a hole in that argument about children needing proper nutrition during the day in order to learn.

Brown bag might not be a choice in the future.
Remember the chicken nuggets incident?

Why schools need to provide lunches is beyond me. Have the parents provide lunches. I never had lunches at school that the school provides. Catholic Schools don’t provide lunches. Your parents make the lunches for the kids. This is so ridiculous. I kinda agree with the school that if you owe, you don’t eat the regular meal. In real life, if you owe, you don’t get things.

When I was a kid if you didn’t have your lunch token you just didn’t eat. I was always losing mine, I could borrow one from a friend or I could run home or I could go without.

What is crazy is if some grocery checker alludes to someone using food stamps they could get in trouble but they can humiliate these kids like that.

I grew up as a kid out in the rurals of Alabama. Our school lunch was mostly stuff that kids wouldn’t eat today. One of the great meals as far as I was concerned...was a beef stew plate, with a fresh baked roll (they made their own, with lots of butter), a slab of jello, and a container of milk. This was a four-star lunch to me. I doubt if the whole plate cost more than 30-cents back in those days.

Yum! I would love a lunch like that. Of course the communists would never allow for such a lunch today. They need caviar and shashemi which kids hate and won't eat. If they are going to provide lunches, at least make them kid friendly.

This is silly! If you don't pay your bills, you don't get the service, it's as simple as that. Some parents won't get around to paying unless you cut their kid off.

I pay for school lunch online. I get an e-mail notification if my son's account drops under $10. Easy-peasy.

Why? Because of the great benefits : more taxes on the people, bigger budget for the schools, more gub’mint employees to “manage” the program, more union members, handing out gub’mint contracts for the food to worthy, getting the sheep comfortable with the yoke.

our schools did the same thing, you could only get pbb&j if you had no money on your card. It really ticked me off as a parent
