Just so everyone knows, the Canadian government did not want this scumbag returned to Canada. The government fought against his return in the courts. The US could have kept him indefinitely and the Harper government would not have protested.
Obama's policy is, of course, to close Gitmo. To do so, you first have to release all the inmates. This release is a step towards that goal.
