Police ID man who killed self on TV after chase

PHOENIX (AP) -- A man who stole a car at gunpoint, shot at Phoenix police officers and then led them on a chase that ended with his suicide broadcast on national television was identified Saturday as a wanted felon with a long criminal history.

Jodon F. Romero, 33, was wanted for violating his parole for a weapons conviction and had numerous other violent crimes in his background, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

I've seen much worse on TV. About 20 years ago Budd Dwyer, the Pennsylvania state treasurer, was charged with corruption and taking bribes. So he called a press conference at his office in Harrisburg at noon one day and invited all the TV stations and reporters. A lot of the TV stations, including the ones from the big cities, were covering it live as part of their noon news programs.

Dwyer walked in holding a manila envelope and a few sheets of paper. He read this long rambling statement about how innocent and persecuted he was, and how he loved his family, etc..etc... Then he said, "I'd ask anyone who has a weak stomach to please leave the room.", pulled a .357 magnum out of the manila envelope, stuck it in his mouth, and blew his brains out...all on live TV.

That night on the 6 o' clock news many stations blacked out the final 5 seconds when they re-broadcast it.

The NFL Joe Don certainly lived up to the family name with his various antics.

Actually, they did run it with a 5 sec. delay. Problem was that Shep was watching the delayed version, and the broadcast was live.

Not really. He told them to cut it as soon as the kid went flat but they didn’t. That’s why you have him saying “cut it off” so many times. The problem with this is not the act itself but others thinking they will be “on air” in the commission of killing themselves. The kid in this video was running from his demons. I would have tried to talk him down but he wanted nothing to do with that.
