New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie predicts presidential race will be “turned upside down” after first debate

Francesca Chambers

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said Sunday on Face the Nation that he thinks the presidential race will be “turned upside down” on Thursday morning after GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama debate each other for the first time on Wednesday evening in the first 2012 general election debate.

Christie admitted Romney has had “a tough couple of weeks,” but said, ”the great news for Republicans” is that Romney is a wonderful debater and will do “extraordinarily well.” Christie said Romney’s biggest advantage Wednesday is that Americans will have the opportunity to see what he and Obama truly believe without the spin of the mainstream media.

“I think it is a whole different deal. What he’s going to be doing on Wednesday night is not going to be filtered by anybody,” Christie said. “It’s not going to be spun by anybody or filtered by anybody. The American people are gonna to get 90 minutes to look these two men right in their eye in the their living rooms and make a judgment about their visions for the future, their experience and their records and be able to say, ‘Who do we trust the most to be the President of the United States during these incredibly challenging times.”

The Republican Governor also addressed Romney’s now infamous 47 percent comment, saying he doesn’t think that comment has hurt Romney because that’s not what the majority of the American people care about.

“Here’s what I think the American people and voters are much smarter about than we give them credit for – they know that political candidates at time, when they’re being taped every minute of the day are going to say things inartfully, ” Christie said, pointing out that the current President is the one who claimed during his presidential campaign four years ago that he’d been to all 57 states in America (There are only 50). Christie said it’s clear that the President simply “misspoke.” Similarly, he said that Romney just said something “inelegantly.”

“But here’s what I know he really believes. What he believes is that everybody in America should have skin in the game. Everybody in America has to be part of a shared sacrifice to create opportunity for greatness again – for our people, and our country,” Christie explained, promising Romney would “convey that message on Wednesday night clearly and directly to the American people.

“And I’m telling you, Bob, Thursday morning you’re all going to be scratching your heads and saying, ‘Wow, we have a barn burner now for the next 33 days,’ Christie told the show’s host Bob Schieffer.

So confident in Romney’s win is Christie, that he declined to comment on whether or not he would consider running for President in 2016 if Romney loses this November.

“Mitt Romney’s gonna win, and so it’s a question that I don’t need to address,” he said. “I hope in 2016 to be workin’ hard for Mitt Romney’s reelection as President of the United States.”

"No matter what happens in the debate, the media pundits will announce that Obama won."

BINGO.

I'm glad I read your post, because that's the same thing I was gonna put on here.

The State-Run-Media already have the instructions and Talking Points, along with the outcome, printed and ready to publish, straight from the White Hut.

You can bet that "Obama was far more polished and professional" and "Romney showed his weakness on the Issues" are in the can and ready for prime time publication.

There will be questions prepared, scripted, and handed to the "impartial Moderators" at EVERY "Debate", ALL designed to prevent any embarassing FACTS to challenge The Messiah, and crafted to try to trip and confuse and/or embarass The Challenger.

It's a joke, and the Telepromter is already programmed with sound-bite material.

yep.

The media isn’t going to let this turn into a referendum on Obama.

Saw a ridiculous article on CNN today about how the criticism about Dem oversampling is not accurate.

The absurd premise is that basically because people can change party ID, pollsters mentioning ID is supposedly new (that’s absurd....they’ve done that for years) and because Fox polls show the same thing it means Obama has it in the bag.

I only wish comments were still turned on for that article, for it was beyond ridiculous.

Fox Polls are notorious for being the WORST in oversampling since they changed polling firms a few years ago.

That was literally the best argument in this long-winded piece. The left is running scared.

I saw Ryan on Fox News Sunday a few hours ago. Wow....now I don’t want to win just to defeat Obama. I want to win to GET THAT MAN in the VP slot and have in next in line to run for president.

He was extremely articulate and the camera loves him.

I just watched a couple pieces of the debate between Romney and Kennedy in 1994. Unfortunately, I can’t find the entire debate. Romney impressed me, he was fast on his feet, able to repel a couple of Teddy’s childish attacks and seemed to kick butt.

O, is not really a great debater. He may have seemed OK against McCain but McCain is an idiot.

Despite the speculation (hey, it’s possible) that they’ll give O the questions in advance, he’s not really good at thinking on his feet (or anywhere else, seriously) while Romney appeared in the ‘94 debate to be able to get his message across while not getting sidetracked by B.S. questions and quips.

Those debates are worth watching. The audience was a joke though.

Who whoever comes up with the best "There he goes again" or "You're no Jack Kennedy" line will win in the eyes of the media.

Obama will capture the sympathy vote as he's seen running off stage crying "Momeeee" after the moderator asks him to name one major positive accomplishment during his term in office but cool vacations for Michelle don't count.

Christy was great - as usual. I hope he is right - but it will be Jim Lehrer controling - so it will be Romney vs Obama/Lehrer.

Romney needs to buy half hour TV spots - Ross Perot style, where he will not be filtered by others.

Good article, “How Romney Can Win With a Mandate” gives a great outline for such a forum - located here:

Probably more on the lines of “why do Republicans hate women?”

Rumnie has to get through the debates without stepping on certain body parts! He HAS to get by without stupid statements like the 47% thing. He has to stay away from this stuff. Attack Obama’s do nothing government, massive debt spending, poor domestic and foreign policy blunders.

Why are there even debates. The last 4 years have been hell with a Muslim President who "sides with them"....PERIOD

How do we get rid of the debt. It's insane!!

Except I doubt the moderator will be asking Obama anything that challenging.

Indeed, anyone of rational mind would think there is nothing to debate. Obama is a miserable failure and letting him remain in office is beyond risky, it’s suicidal.

So what’s left to debate beyond the quickest practical way to get him out of office?

Some say the election will be decided in the first 90 seconds of the debate.

Like Kennedy/Nixon?

Focus group Frank Luntz said that, but it isn’t so, Romney just has to show up and tell the truth.

Attack Obama’s do nothing government, massive debt spending, poor domestic and foreign policy blunders.

Wrong emphasis on the first point - Obama's administration is anything but "do nothing." Witness Obama care and its new taxes, literally thousands of new regulations stifling business and restricting individual freedom, pushing a gay-lesbian agenda including the military, etc. By their actions Obama, Michelle and his czars have already done immense harm to the country and the economy. "Do nothing"? No way can that be called.

Does anyone really think these debate moderators are going to allow this election to be “turned upside down” in Romney’s favor on their watch? It will never be allowed to happen, they have plans A B C D E F G at the ready. Christie is delusional.

Actually, Obama could spew green vomit, his head could do a 360, he could levitate and the MSM would say he beat Romney.

I read somewhere that historically the taller candidate wins, and also the candidate with blue (or similar to blue) eyes.
