With the United States requiring only four points from the 12 on offer, Europe somehow secured eight and a half to clinch a historic 14½-13½ win.
Martin Kaymer sank a five-foot putt on the 18th green to get his team to the 14 points needed to retain the trophy, before a Tiger Woods bogey in the final match gifted them overall victory.
The win matches the record recovery of Ben Crenshaw's US team in Boston in 1999 and is the best from a European side in the Ryder Cup.
It was a fitting tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros, the man who did so much to reinvigorate the competition and whose trademark colours the side wore on the final day.'

Epic USA choke.
The U.S. led 10 to 6 at yesterday’s close, after all the matches with two players from each team.
Today, in the singles matches the U.S. won just three more while the Europeans won eight, giving the Europeans a 14 to 13 lead, before the close of the last match - Tiger Woods vs F. Molinari.
Before the 18th hole, Tiger was “1 Up” over Molinari. Molinari won the 18th hole, and so each was awarded “1/2”, making the final team scores 14 1/2 for Europe and 13 1/2 for the U.S.
What I don’t understand about the rules was they kept repeating (the TV nnoucners), that even if Tiger managed to win the 18th hole, making the U.S. team score of 14 wins, that the rules would still reward the cup to Europe.
Maybe someone can tell me why the outcome would not have been different if Tiger had won the 8th hole in the last match, converting his “1 up” score to “2 up” and a clear win of his match with Molinari. I’m guessing there are no “tie breakers” in the Ryder Cup, and whoever gets the magic 14+ wins first is the winner?
Does anyone know why Europe had won the cup, once they had 14 wins, and whether not a win by Tiger would have made it 14 wins for the U.S.?
Tiger shot 5 under on the back nine in both fourball matches. That is not really bad. If Stricker had given him any help, they could have won.
The Europeans are the current holders of the cup. In the case of a tie, they retain it. You have to beat the cup holder outright to take it away.

Thanks. I never heard the NBC announcers repeat that simple rule - I just keep hearing them say Europe would win the cup as soon as they had 14 wins, no matter what happened in any unfinished matches.
You should have been in the announcers booth.

Stricker deserves more blame, IMO; but both were disappointing. I don’t think the USA will win the cup again any time soon. I doubt I’ll watch it next time.

If you watched the matches, Tiger gets a B, Stricker gets an F.
In 4 ball, Stricker and Woods played together twice and lost both matches 1 up with Woods getting 13 birdies in 2 matches and Stricker getting 1 eagle and 1 birdie in 2 matches. Stricker was 0-4. Woods was 0-3-1. The real problem was Woods got stuck with Stricker for 3 pairings.
Ok, maybe Woods should have gotten 17 birdies in 2 matches and then Woods would be 2-1-1 and Stricker would have been 2-2-0.
Yes, but where was he on the front nine? All over the place and his birdies on the back nine were too little too late.
