Space Weather Message Code: ALTK06 Serial Number: 294 Issue Time: 2012 Oct 01 0443 UTC
ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 6 Threshold Reached: 2012 Oct 01 0439 UTC Synoptic Period: 0300-0600 UTC Active Warning: Yes NOAA Scale: G2 - Moderate Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 55 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude. Induced Currents - Power grid fluctuations can occur. High-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms. Spacecraft - Satellite orientation irregularities may occur; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites is possible. Radio - HF (high frequency) radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes. Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state.

Here’s a nice set of images of photos sent in from all over the world. Many of them have multiple photos once you click on a photo.
Too many lights in Seattle!
Seems more like it will create severe attenuation of signals temporarily but that’s about it.
Kewel.
I need to add that to my bucket list.
“Get the hell outta here... I got the game on..”
As an Astrophysicist, he's all up in that.
DOUBLE IMPACT: Earth’s magnetic field is reverberating in response to a pair of impacts on Sept. 30th. A weak interplanetary shock wave hit Earth at 10:25 UT followed by a stronger CME strike at approximately 22:30 UT. Observers in Norway are reporting significant ground currents, while the Arctic Circle is glowing with Northern Lights. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, especially during the hours around local midnight.

maybe we should make a deal..
what kind of deal?..
a deal deal.. maybe he’s a republican..
I was trying to do a little JT65 work this morning on 40 and 20 and it was pointless. (JT65 is a mode of digital communications, especially suited of low signal strength)
Doesn't all this solar activity ALSO indicate additional infrared (or thermal) radiation? As in warming of the atmosphere and oceans?
Maybe they worded it this way in order to shield the delicate and sacred "anthropogenic global warming" narrative.
Hopefully so...I could stand a nice mild winter.
Anyone?
Sounds like Obama’s tee time is safe.
But his i-pod will be on the fritz.
Once the snow starts squeeching like busted styrofoam underfoot, you know it's cold.
Anything warm with only a little moisture on it should sublimate the moisture in short order... If there is a lot, fuhgeddaboutit.
Most lubricants, even light oils, will gel or stiffen badly (a few synthetics won't). A friend's SKS wouldn't cycle (until I cleaned the gunk off the gas piston). The lubricant/preservative in there was solid.
Thanks all for your comments. Is it significant that this warning came with supposedly no warning, late on a Sunday night?
To people who make a habit of watching the sun for disturbances, they knew something was coming.
See, the sun rotates on a 27 day interval. So if you see a big CME or flare on October 1, you should expect to see something 27 days later. The change in the K index was larger 28 days ago than now...
