Obama uses Down syndrome to hit Romney

Paul Bedard

In its latest effort to slap Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comment, the Obama campaign on Monday tapped a young woman with Down syndrome to pull at the heartstrings of undecided voters.

The Obama-Biden campaign's web page featured a "letter of the week" from a 25-year-old woman who wrote that "I am one of the 47% of Americans who fall under Mitt Romney's definition of 'entitled' and 'unable to take responsibility for my life.' I have Down syndrome."

The letter comes on the heel of the campaign's TV ad playing in battleground states that uses the audio of Romney dismissing efforts to win over 47 percent of voters dedicated to Obama because they receive some kind of government assistance. While the Romney campaign said the context is about the election and not how he will approach the nation as president, the Obama campaign has made the case that Romney won't look out for those who need help.

Enter "Brittany" and her letter. In it, she said that she is a registered Democrat, and on assistance, which she said makes her part of Obama's 47 percent.

"My mother applied for Social Security's Supplemental Security Income program (SSI) for me when I was 19. I really want to make lots of money and have a hot tub someday, but SSI subtracts my paychecks from my SSI benefits, so I don't have much to put into a savings account," she wrote.

"I am now working for a store, folding clothes and doing returns. I like my job a lot! I make $4.98 an hour and I am allowed to work 25-30 hours a week (I have paid $542.72 in federal, FICA, state, and city taxes this year as of August 31st)," she added in a knock at Romney's other comment that many of Obama's supporters don't pay taxes.

It's full of very cute lines. "I just got my own apartment and share it with another girl like me. I get to pay rent now ($325 a month) and pay for my telephone and cable because I like the Disney Channel. I was not allowed to take my dog with me, but I can hang all of my Hannah Montana posters on my bedroom wall," she wrote.

And, she added, "I have also included my picture, not just because I'm cute, but because I wanted to give you a face of one of the 47% to share with Mr. Romney."

Blogger Jeryl Bier noticed the letter first, calling it an "exploitive cheap shot."

This from Obama - the person who just essentially banned the use of Flexible Spending Accounts to help with schooling for special needs children.

“From the same guy who made the “Special Olympics” bowling joke.”

Precisely! I would hit him with that, bring Sarah Palin into the mix, and highlight the fact that Obama would likely have favored ending this person’s life before birth. Obama has no ethics.

Living in a Detroit suburb, they have little chance to either find work or sell their homes and move to a more suitable state.

Most are either members of or children of UAW members. They are still expecting their 100K per year job for shooting screws at he local GM plant that closed thirty years ago.

Two simple retorts to that.

1. Obama's party would choose to abort her.

2. Capping FSA's at $2500 will raise taxes on parents of children like her, regardless of their income.

My suspicion is that this is BS manufactured by zero and his handlers. If this lady can write a letter to the POTUS, she can work and NOT be one of the 47%. Many Down Syndrome people do just that.

This girl probably isn’t real and is more likely a “composite” of his foreign policy advisers, economic advisers, and Chris Matthews (explains the Hannah Montana posters).

Actually no one knows what Romney meant with his stupid remark.

Some think he meant those who collect a government check, others think he means those who don’t owe income taxes in a given year, still others think he means the 53% of Americans who voted for Obama, it doesn’t seem to have made any sense.

I do not think I can have more disgust and disdain for this man or his administration.

Everyone knows he was talking about the freeloaders not this wonderful woman.

My son will always need to be taken care of but my wife and I both work and are very involved in making sure my son learns as much as he can so he can be proud to be a productive citizen. He will never be on his own and neither will he totally dependent, we are making sure of that. We need to take a stand and confront the laze SOB's who have not only both their hands out but their damn feet up when they do it. These people are sick.

There is no way this young woman understands what politics is about and how they are using her.

Easy solution: Show a picture of Downs lady next to a picture of Obamaphone lady.

I call BS on this person’s story. The average IQ of a Down syndrome adult is about 50, with a range of 20 to 75. My younger brother is mentally retarded, supposedly due to the Rh factor (mother AB-, father O+), and his IQ is 79. He was an anomaly at his “trainable mentally retarded” school because he was the only one who could read and write, although his skills were rudimentary. No way a DS person “wrote” this letter.

"My mother applied for Social Security's Supplemental Security Income program (SSI) for me when I was 19."

Then she filled out my voter registration form making me a Democrat. She joins me in the voting booth to make sure I check the right boxes.

Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) tried this old “personal anecdote” trick at the Town Hall meeting preceding the Senators’ attempts to sell Obamacare to the peasants. The crowd was polite to the mother of a disabled child whom he trotted out to precede him; but they gave him holy hell and groaned and booed him.

So she’s voting for the guy who thinks she should have never been born.

It's amazing, isn't it? Completely loony.

From the girl’s letter:

“P.S. My mom and her friend helped me write this.”

My son has Down Syndrome, even if he were high functioning he probably wouldn’t be able to fully understand all the issues to be able to make an informed decision regarding any election. I’d probably be the one making the decision for him.

Well now Romney should put an ad with a special needs child to say how Obama cut back on health savings account his family needs for his medical care.

Oddly, she’s is clearly part of the 47% that would never vote for Romney. But she’s not part of the 47% that Romney was talking about, because she actually has a job and pays taxes.

You are correct. This letter was composed by someone else. There is no way a DS person is able to compose much of anything that is coherant enough to become a complete sentence, let alone a letter like this.

My grandson is barely able to complete sentences coherently, and when asked what he said, he can't repeat, already forgotten. Their attention span is about 5 mins.

She don't know what 47% means.

This administration is dispicable and desperate.
