You’re right. But the terror of starving to death or being homeless is very motivating. People would pull themselves together and work hard and act properly if they knew there was no other alternative, no safety net.
In larger cities there used to be lots of black owned businesses, banks, hotels, cafes, night clubs. They were destroyed by desegregation.

My good friend is a jobs coach. Her job is to help clients develope basic skills to keep employment. All of her clients are white. She says, ‘We’re screwed.’ It’s almost impossible to help them create good habits. Most (8/10) have quit their jobs after the program ends and sign up on disability.

There’s a black dude who stands on the corner about a mile from my house, on a busy street, rain or shine, cold or burning hot - playing his guitar, singing and dancing. He has no collection hat, no sign asking fir money. If you talk to him, he says he’s taking responsibility for his own happiness and doesn’t need anything except what God sees fit to give him. He’s probably 70 years old or so.
This old boy probably has more money than Carter has pills. Stand there for 15 minutes talking to him - I’ve seen him take well over 100 dollars from well wishers and passers by.
