State and federal officials are set to announce $121 million in federal funding for a high-speed rail project between New Haven and Springfield, Mass.

In addition to Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who will announce the funding, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin support the 62-mile project.

It calls for service every 30 minutes during peak periods and every 60 minutes at other times. Speeds would reach up to 110 miles an hour. Malloy's office projects 1.26 million riders annually by 2030.

The state says it expects to finish design work next year and launch service in 2016. As of last year, Connecticut earmarked $286 million in bonding for the projected cost of $800 million.

I like the trains in Europe.... I’d rather see rockets in the U.S. (Innovation in the US is dying in the hands of the government)

“$121 million in federal funding”

i sure hope those people in new england remember to thank the good people of florida (and other states) for paying for their jobs program

i’m so glad 50%+ of my day can help people 1500 miles away that regard FL with contempt

Didn’t Bostom have something called the “Big Dig” that cost us taxpayers about 1000 X what was originally projected, and then as soon as they finished, it started falling apart and killing people?

I guess they need another 50 year project to feed the trolls.

OK.....that’s 62 miles, and for the sake of the discussion, it does 110mph the whole way.....and they’re going to have a train leaving every 30 minutes....must have two tracks.....

Moron Malloy somehow thinks these new boondogle transportation projects between dying cities will buy him votes. The New Britain Hartford busway will be filled with empty buses, and this new high speed rail line won’t even stop at Bradley airport. And even if it did, it still wouldn’t make sense. Yeah right, I’m going to leave my car parked in Hartford for a week. Not. Morons like Malloy are a threat to our republic.

1.26 million riders annually

Sounds mighty low to me. That works out to an average of 3450 a day. California will have 4500 boarding in Fresno and 5100 in Bakersfield. Is there less pie in the New England sky?

PS How long before Fresno tips over?

it's ALL Barbara Streisand

High-speed rail between those sorry little cities makes no sense. Meanwhile, Amtrak and the commuter rails in the business end of the state crawl along inefficiently.

From New Haven to Springfield... one sewer to another, with a couple of stop-offs in the sister dumps of Middletown and Hartford.

What a load of crap. More backroom deals and money-stuffing into union pockets. Worthless. What person of import would use this crap method of transportation?
