Turkey hits targets inside Syria after border deaths

Turkey says it has fired artillery against targets inside Syria after Syrian shells killed five people in a Turkish border town.

The Turkish military shelled Syrian targets identified by radar near the border, the office of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement.

Nato said it would hold an urgent meeting over the incident.

In Syria, forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are trying to put down an 18-month-old insurgency.

Turkish territory has been hit by fire from Syria on several occasions since the uprising against President Assad began, but Wednesday's incident was the most serious.

The shells, fired from Tall al-Abyad in Syria, hit the Turkish town of Akcakale.

The dead are said to include a woman and her three children.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc was quoted as saying that Syria must be made to account for the incident and there must be a response under international law.

Loving it when a plan comes together! Get Syria and Turkey in a war, Russia comes in and crushes Turkey, Israel crushes Iran while Nato stands by and says REMEMBER CRETE AND CYPRUS.

Russia comes in and crushes Turkey

Russia doesn't share a border with Turkey and is utterly incapable of "crushing" them in any way other than nuking them.

Can't fathom any circumstance where they would want to attack Turkey.

Methinks the Turks will not put up with Assad for very much longer. And, NATO will not have a say.

Couple all this with Hezbollah, the Persians, al-Qada, Islamist, etc., you got the makings of a war.

Did I mention Israel?

Turkey hosts islamic terrorist’s gatherings and conventions, groups that have attacked Russia horribly. This is why the Russians are supporting Syria. ....Turkey is right across the Black Sea from Russia.

Nukes can be very small, as small as one that you can hold in your hand, 10 inch diameter ball...and that was back half a century ago. Russia could make all kinds of things go pop in Turkey. They’d probably go for control of the entrance to the Black Sea.....Syrian’s gas Istanbul and thats a done deal. Nato won’t do squat for the islamic republic of Turkey.
