Tough reviews for Jim Lehrer as debate moderator
San Francisco Chronicle (SFGate) ^ | 10/4/12 | David Bauder

NEW YORK — Jim Lehrer may be regretting his decision to come out of semi-retirement and moderate his 12th presidential debate.

The veteran PBS anchor drew caustic social media reviews for his performance on Wednesday, with critics saying he failed to keep control of the campaign's first direct exchange between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. The candidates talked over Lehrer's attempts to keep them to time limitations, and his open-ended questions frequently lacked sharpness.

The tough assessments crossed party lines: Republican commentator Laura Ingraham wrote on Twitter that Lehrer seemed "a bit overwhelmed." Comic and Democratic activist Bill Maher bluntly tweeted that "Lehrer sucked."

Old liberals’s performances under today’s scrutiny and the rapid post evaluations on the internet sites often suck, and the world knows instantly, that they sucked big time without their fellow mediots covering for them.

It’s about time obama had to stand on his own two feet. He’s had media cover since 2008. If obama was able to support his own record he wouldn’t have lost the debate. It’s that simple!

Leher failed his marching orders. Or maybe barry just sucks and can’t defend the indefensible.

Love the “Princess Bride”.......as you wish. ;-)

I’m just waiting for the foreign policy debate. I want to hear what Obama has to say about two things: Fast and Furious and Benghazi.

Lehrer was supposed to tilt the playing field for Barry.

That was understood by the MSM to be his main function.

That this old man just tried to moderate an honest and fair debate is viewed by the left as a treasonous betrayal.

I thought it was the best moderated Presidential debate in the last 40 years. Like a good referee in a boxing match, the moderator should be almost invisible letting the combatants go after one another. The debate is about the participants and their views, not the moderator. The public got an unfiltered look at Romney and Obama. Now the libs and their MSM allies are upset that the emperor has no clothes.

Exactly right! The media & dems are in a hysterical panic stricken mode, because of 0dumb0's dismal, lackluster performance, and they are trying to shift the blame onto Jim Lehrer. In reality, Jim Lehrer tried to tilt the debate in favor of 0dumb0 and got called out by Romney on it (On the first topic 0dumb0 answered 3 times and Romney only twice. When Lehrer tried to shift to another topic, Romney hit back hard....."He answered first, I get to finish").

Otherwise, I think that Lehrer did a good job, which is to direct the debate to the next main topic, but otherwise let the candidates in essence debate each other. 0dumb0 just plain sucked, which is why the lefties are hysterical & deranged this morning.

I love listening to the meltdown by Chrissy (Tingle) Matthews, in fact all the leftie retards are in full meltdown & blame mode this morning. Love it!!!

I listened to the debate on the radio. Lehrer sounded a little irritated with Obama on more than one occassion.
Overall,he sounded a little irritated that the both of them were using up the allotted time.
He said someting at the end that they didn’t get to the “last pod”
Anyone know what the last queston was suppose to be?

On the first question, Obama spoke first and Lehrer was going to proceed to a new question after Obama had spoken a third time and Romney only twice. Romney stopped him and said, "He spoke first, so I get to speak last." The contest was over at that point, Romney had won. He had removed Lehrer's ability to provide an advantage to Obama, he had shown command and control in a presidential manner, and he flatly pissed Obama off. Neither Lehrer or Obama recovered after that.

Great summary & recap of Romney owning the debate!

Jim Lehrer did fine. He even tried to help Obama focus in on the issues. Obama’s coke addiction is frying his brain and no one could have helped him last night.

I liked the format. It focused in on the candidates not the moderator. It went very well.

I am sure Michelle Obama and Valerie Jarret were upset. After all, they are the Co-Presidents of the USA. Obama likes to shoot his mouth off and pretend he is emperor of the world. He is too busy to be president.

I think if 0dumb0 thought he would get a little nookie from Wookie on their so-called anniversary, he’s got another thing coming after his debate debacle. It’s the spare bedroom or couch for him. Not that he’s really complaining. Who would want to sleep with or wake up with godzilla? She must be a fright to behold in the morning, since she is such a hideous sight during the rest of the day!

Libs mad at Leaher for failing to throw Obama a life line as he thrashed around in the water.

Bingo. That's what this whole thing is about.

We’ve gone from Bush’s fault to Lehrer’s fault.

Lehrer did fair, on the other hand Bush was an utter disaster.

I’m now watching the debate for the first time. Effin’ Lehrer was clearly (and predictably) trying to coach the Marxist revolutionary as much as he thought he could get away with.

If I NEVER see Lehrer The Shill “moderate” another bipartisan debate, it will be too soon.

It’s Lehrer’s fault Obama got FOUR minutes more than Romney.

That and the fact Obama is clearly not leadership/presidential material.

Without the teleprompter, prepared notes and having to face an opponent, Obama was clearly not able to hold up.

The man revealed he's out of his league, which was not only depicted in his responses, but his demeanor and body language etc.

This was my favorite format for a debate. The moderator should just ask the question and then stay out of it. I am sick of the media thinking they are the star of the debate. it’s about the candidates!!! David Gregory, are you listening?
