Gun control advocates stirring trouble for the presidential candidates

Advocates for gun control may have possibly inserted a sleeper issue for the first debate on October 3rd, between presidential challenger Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama and surely both men would wish to avoid this issue like the plague on that evening. The dilemma for the candidates is that the second amendment right to bear arms is a critical issue for anyone that wants to win the big swing states since many of them have territories where gun ownership is popular. But clearly both men have been moved by what appear to be genuine humanitarian principles and are bound to disappoint advocates from both sides of the issue. They have both professed varying degrees of support for the constitutional premise of gun ownership while struggling to balance the need for reasonable public safety.

Both men have publicly expressed condolences to the families of the shooting victims of the Aurora Colarado tragedy and yet Reuters reports that members of 8 of the 12 families affected by the tragedy have banded together to make a direct appeal in a letter to the first debate's moderator Jim Lehrer to query both candidates on this issue. Stephen Barton one of the wounded survivors of the shooting has appeared in a 60 second television ad sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns and a very vocal critic of both candidates on this issue; Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City.

The problem for the candidates is that gun control is a clear loser in elections. The anti-freedom position has been discredited constitutionaly, factually, and culturally. It is only the far left "progressives" that still cling to the outdated notion that disarming people makes them safe. If the old media were not pushing for a state monopoly on arms, there would be no debate at all.

But, the candidates have to deal with the old meda. President Obama doesn't want to remove the protective cover they have given him on the gun issue, and Romney does not want to give them the least bit of a hook to hang their animosity toward him on. The old media still has enormous influence, as has been shown by their ability to cover for President Obama in the Fast and Furious, Libya, and Solyndra scandals.

Exactly. What is it, nationwide? 65/35 against gun control? 70/30?

Even the libs around here are gun owners.

Only an uninformed dummy would step in that.

Oh, they’re against illegal guns, are they? Well, I’m against bad food. How brave we are.

By the way, what are the families calling for, exactly? And why do they let such a situtation turn them against inanimate objects? Would they make an ad calling for a ban on combustion engines because their kid died in a highway accident?

All three avoided it and that was good news for us - and them.

And why do they let such a situtation turn them against inanimate objects?

I see two things, perhaps there are more.

First, they are treated as heroes and lauded by the old media.

Second, it gives them an excuse for not doing the hard work required for self defense. Making the state responsible instead of yourself is a convenient way to avoid responsibility.

"big swing states since many of them have territories where gun ownership is popular."

Territories? My state has counties, cities, corporations, but no territories. Does he mean the North West Territories? It doesn't matter, my state is not a swing state. We even ran a democrat challenger to Barry this year.

Just out of curiosity – will they bring up the Fast and Furious version of the ObamaPhone – Barry’s Guns for Gangsters program?
