Police officers aboard a helicopter on Tuesday discovered a large-scale marijuana farm in a Southeast Side field with 1,500 plants spanning the size of two football fields, a few sleeping bags, fresh food and camping equipment.

Police officers aboard a helicopter Tuesday discovered a large-scale marijuana farm spanning an area the size of two football fields near the Bishop Ford Freeway.

During routine patrols, the two officers spotted several bright green pot plants among dark green foliage. The 6-foot-tall plants were neatly arranged in rows, which added to their suspicion.

"I told (my partner), 'Turn around, let's go check this out, make sure we have what we have here,'" said Ed Graney, a tactical flight officer with the Cook County sheriff's office.

So...what’d they do? Drop a match and then ‘hover’ for an hour?

Typically, those who run large-scale marijuana operations use the profits to buy firearms, he said.

"People will do whatever they can to make their money," McCarthy said of the operation located not far from a police station.

Which is why the War On Drugs will continue to fail as Prohibition of the drug alcohol failed before it. The best way to get that firearms money out of criminal hands is to legalize and regulate the sale of drugs.

Bullschmidt! It’s down the road for a CPD impound lot.

See, that’s why the US Farm Bureau has offices in every US county, farming or not!

What's left of it.

Ha! Good one...

That road (Doty), as a link from 103rd to 130th is nearly impassable 365 days a year. Even the CFD cuts onto the Ford to save time northbound.

Maybe they meant the station at 727 E 111th - it's not that far.

Funny stuff...Ya have to step over all the murdered dead bodies in Chicago while they’re cruising around looking for pot plants with 2 million dollar tax paid helicopters.

The closest Chi PD Station to 107th & Stoney is the 4th District: 2255 East 103rd Street and the 'Weed Farm' would be in Beat 434.

I guess that's 'close' by car, 1.3 miles - 4 min drive, but I wouldn't want to walk it (even if 100% safe). But it's not exactly 'next door' either.
