CAMAS, Wash. A chair hanging from a tree as a political statement against President Barack Obama is stirring controversy near Camas.
George and Kathy Maxwell say the chair represents Obama, much like the empty chair Clint Eastwood spoke to at the Republican National Convention. But they say the reason it is hanging from their tree is because someone stole the first one they had on the ground.
We figured wed hang it up so everyone can see it; there is no offense intended -- well other than hoping people vote against Obama of course, said Kathy Maxwell.
After Eastwoods RNC chair conversation, conservatives took pictures of empty chairs and posted them online. A few of those chairs were pictured hanging by rope from trees, causing outrage at what was dubbed chair lynchings in Texas and Virginia.
Now the same sight in Camas has some people very concerned about a connection to racism, and violence that came with it in the past.
Its really painful for people who have a knowledge or connection to that history: some people have family connections to it and some people have seen the pictures, said Sirius Bonner, a special advisor on diversity at Clark College.
The Maxwells say they never intended to portray a lynching, but now that they know it appears that way to others, they still have no intention of removing the chair hanging from their tree.
"Thats really unfortunate but thats really a bunch of hooey, thats really my belief," said Maxwell.
Bonner is disappointed by the Maxwells decision to leave the chair hanging, but hopes it sparks a serious discussion.
When youre made aware of how people respond to it, when youre made aware of some of the history, what do you do at that point? I think its unfortunate that theyve decided to leave it up, and what I think it does is create an opportunity to have further dialogue and conversation, said Bonner.
I wrote a parody about the lynching of a PB&J sandwich being a hate crime. It’s on my blog, see tagline
Channon Gail Christian, 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23,
There’s a floating empty chair on the front page of Facebook, LOL.
Good for them.
Let's take a good look at black on white crime before we start talking about connections.
Sure whites (and blacks) did some things in the past that were PART OF THE TIMES in which they lived, but that was the past.
Blacks have no cause today for their violence and outrage. Not one of them have felt the whip or worked hard picking cotton all day "for the man", yet they claim this as their excuse to bite the hands that feed them?
First, it’s ‘of course,’ not ‘of coarse.’ Secondly, it’s free speech on one’s own property. Do as you will.
Rasist term is getting worn out.
Its being throw around daily for things that aint even close.
The bros are soon to find out no one will give a rats ass when you scream RASIST cause you abused the crap out of the term rendering it meaningless.
It’s not a black or even malato chair.
OK, so are all those tire swings people have hanging from trees in their yard controversial and racist, too?
As I said in an earlier thread.
You should read ‘The Language of the 3rd Reich’. Its about how the nazis used speech to manipulate the German people.

Under the Third Reich, the official language of Nazism came to be used as a political tool. The existing social culture was manipulated and subverted as the German people had their ethical values and their thoughts about politics, history and daily life recast in a new language. This notebook, originally called LTI (Lingua Tertii Imperii) - the abbreviation itself a parody of Nazified language - was written out of Klemperer’s conviction that the language of the Third Reich helped to create its culture. As Klemperer writes: “it isn’t only Nazi actions that have to vanish, but also the Nazi cast of mind, the typical Nazi way of thinking, and its breeding ground: the language of Nazism”.
The left in this country has had an alarming degree of success at doing exactly the same.
Da porch swing has gotta go!!!!!
Sorry about the grammar. I understand they can do it and our within their rights to do so and I did not mean to sound judgmental.
” thats really a bunch of hooey,” said Maxwell.
You tell `em Max.
