Johnny Ramsey, the 79-year-old Korean War veteran who collected and sold junk to pay for medications for his ailing wife, said just minutes before court Thursday evening: “If I have to go to jail, I guess I am ready.”

....Clover Police officers handcuffed Ramsey – whose nephew is a sheriff’s deputy, whose son is in Afghanistan on his fourth deployment to war – and walked him outside the court building and put him in a police car.

But EmptychairCare would have made the medication free in two more years.

Or unnecessary.

If only he knew it wasn’t really his property.

Particularly with a widower of that age one can wonder about his neurological and/or psychiatric status.I understand why neighbors want tidy yards (for property values purposes) but I'll wager that there was another way to handle this. For example, they could have hired a service to clean the yard and put that bill as a lien on the house.

According to the article people are trying to help him out. They donated money for the fine and are helping to put up a privacy fence. The neighbors did not complain. He was cited by code compliance. There is also some information about Ramsey’s past that wouldn’t look good in the headline.

Ok, I’ve gotta little problem with this quote....

“...I got no problem with the ‘po-lice....”

My family hails from West Virginia and they (and I) sometimes pronounce words a little “funny.” But if this guy had been an African-American and spoke with a poor “Black dialect,” do you think they would have drawn attention to it this way?

Same for Mexican or Asian ar any other “funny” dialect.

The picture won’t post here, but just click on it at the link to enlarge it.

I don’t know. Is that what they call “junk”? I should think he could get away with calling it outdoor art. And the lawn looks extremely neat and well-mowed, too.

Nasty neighbors, I’d say.

Is it messy or organized? Can you see it from nearby properties? Is there odor? Do pest creatures live and breed in it? Just because it’s your property doesn’t give you the right to be a nuisance.

Sorry, I guess it wasn’t the neighbors, but the city officials. Jerks.

Yeah, didn’t see that stuff buried near the end of the article.

I dont care what he was a veteran of, if his yard was full of junk (which can be anything from scrap metal to actual bags of trash), strewn about in heaps, and the city catches you, you’re screwed.

He didn’t heed warnings from the town and in the end though a rush fix would take the heat off.

Everyone there seems to have been bending over backwards to help him out. He should take them up on it.

There is also some information about Ramsey’s past that wouldn’t look good in the headline.

Are you referring to the fact that Ramsey once belonged to the same social organization as the esteemed and beloved democrat senator Robert Byrd, now deceased?

The same man who was the longest serving senator in history and known as " “the conscience of the Senate”"?

The same man who once wrote:

“Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

Locally, the BOY SCOUTS do clean up of places where the elderly cannot keep ahead of things. They swarm a property for a Sat & Sun and get’erdone.

The local trash hauling company provides free rollaway dumpsters & take the trash out at no charge, also.

This last summer, they cleaned up 9 or more properties.

We live in a velley that has less than 5000 people.

He was cited by code compliance.

Some of the most sadistic humans you will encounter are code enforcers. They relish bringing utter misery to other humans.

Government is an instrument of force. Many who are attracted to government have evil in their heart and enjoy bringing pain and destruction to others.

"Particularly with a widower of that age one can wonder about his neurological and/or psychiatric status."

Ageist much? I have met quite a few octogenarians and nonagenarians who, given the ill-considered nature of your comment, are probably quite a bit sharper than you are.

Conversely, I've met many, many more stupid 30-year-olds than I have 80-year-olds. The thing about stupidity is that eventually it will catch up with you.

“Many who are attracted to government have evil in their heart and enjoy bringing pain and destruction to others.”

The modern state creates such a class of citizens, fitted to its needs.
