Xbox Live gamers paused from their usual Wednesday night online multiplayer battles against interstellar invaders and zombies to weigh in on the first presidential debate. Xbox users, jacked in through their Internet-connected consoles, are in a better position than most people to answer a quick poll, and Microsoft, which delivers gaming and other entertainment via the Internet through its Xbox Live service, took advantage of its captive audience to conduct some political research. Microsoft acknowledges the limited scope of the poll, says it is still analyzing the data, and hasn't widely publicized the survey results at this point. Still, David Rothschild, an economist with Microsoft Research and a fellow at Columbia University's Applied Statistics Center in New York City, shared some preliminary findings at Scientific American's request. More than 10,000 Xbox Live users responded during the debate. Whereas most of them indicated up front that President Obama's views more closely aligned with their own, for example, on the economy, their responses during the debate suggested that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney got the better of the incumbent.
"We found that 'undecideds' broke for Romney while Obama consistently lost support from his base," Rothschild says.

Well, there are a lot of us XBox gamers out here who didn’t go for der Fuehrer and put down our controllers to vote for McCain even though he was a terrible choice. The hope was to overcome the votes for the kenyan but it seems that our votes were cancelled out by those who could not abide McCain and I suppose expected a miracle or for God to strike down the democrat party before obama could be elected. How did that work out for you all?
Truth be told, there are a lot of XBox gamers out here who are like me, 40+ (I’m 62) and very conservative. Was Romney my first choice? Hell no, but I understand all too well that voting your “conscience” in critical elections will gain you nothing and will help to solidify a win for the National Socialist Democrat Party. Don’t believe for a second that gamers are all kids living in their mother’s basements. I am a fully employed, military retiree, educated, family man; still dedicated to protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States. There are many more like me and all of us have to vote like it will determine the fate of the Republic; because it will.
I beleive Xbox is offering some kind of avatar prize for people who watch all the debates streamed through the Xbox360. My brother used it and said during the debate, you can answer ungoing polls.
I’m in my late 50s, retired military and play XBox also, although not online and not on a regular basis. I agree with your assessment and sentiment, by the way. My point is that the undecided demographic of gamers on which the article focuses may favor Romney over Obama, but that doesn’t translate to help Romney in any way unless they make the effort to go and vote for him.
I think that a lot of people are going to be surprised by the turnout among this demographic. Aside from the fact that a lot of these gamers are military and ex-military, a lot of the younger ones are becoming thoroughly pissed off at the reality their vote for the kenyan brought to them. They are being visited with few prospects for prosperity, happiness or even a subsistence job. Those who are working are seeing more of their income disappear into the pockets of politicians, illegals and those who won’t work or educate themselves. There is still hope although my fears for the future of the Constitution and the Republic rise and fall everyday.
I hope you’re right. Romney is going to need all the votes he can get in batteground states because the Obama thuggery will continue to intensify.
Romney was magnificent in the debate — his win was second only to Gov Palin’s debate win against Biden in 2008.
