Obama touts jobs report as he seeks to lift campaign

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday hailed a drop in the U.S. jobless rate to the lowest level since he took office, saying the country had "come too far to turn back now," as he sought to recover from a lackluster debate performance against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

A decline in unemployment to 7.8 percent in September, announced just more than four weeks before Election Day, gave an unexpected shine to the most vulnerable part of Obama's record - his economic stewardship - and offered him a chance to reset his re-election bid. The rate dropped from 8.1 percent in August.

The much-needed dose of positive news for the Democratic president came two days after he was widely judged the loser in his first presidential debate against Romney, who breathed new life into his own campaign.

Reinforcing a sense of momentum for Romney coming out of the first of three face-offs on the national stage, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters showed Obama's lead narrowing to just 2 percentage points - 46 percent to his rival's 44 percent. Obama had a 6-point advantage in Wednesday's poll.

It’s a miracle. The numbers have not moved in 40 months and all of a sudden, a month before the election, it drops to 7.8.
*shakes head*

I have to laugh at this jobs report. Here is the full reality. Obama spent $800 billion dollars in the “stimulus “ Package. Obama promised the American people that unemployment would never go above 8% if the stimulus bill were passed. 44 months later the economy finally produces enough jobs to get the unemployment below 8%. Obama said by this point unemployment would be at about 5.5%. This is like hiring the supposed best hitter in baseball at the highest price contract and almost four years later he hits his first home run! The team high fives, does victory dances and yells we told you so! Well if this is an anomaly just before the election Obama could be in for a Nov surprise.

And what a jobs report to run on: “Vote for me, because this report is just really awful instead of ultra awful.”

Yeah....at his success rate based on almost 4 years of ‘hard, hard work’, I’d expect that the employment rate would get back down to 4-5% in say, oh, about 2050

Everything about the man is fake. I think he’s arrogant enough to believe people are really this stupid and not as smart as the King. He’s probably gotten away with telling lies his whole life to manipulate people and the system because of PC and the color of his complexion. After all he convinced Michelle to marry him even though he likes to visit bath houses

Drudge has a link to a Newsbusters article that says the reported employment increase is the largest single month's jump in 29 years.

Yes the numbers are as phony as a $3 bill, but have any of you talked to your friends or co-workers yesterday about this.

People at my work (engineers and other professionals) were believing this crap and saying “looks like Obama’s plans are really working now” and “things are going in the right direction”.

I can't believe supposedly intelligent people I know are falling for it, so I have to assume that the vast majority of Americans will also fall for it as well.

Your clueless co-workers who are saying those things are a lost cause. They were going to vote for Obama anyway. The timing of this report is so suspect, that I believe the 5-7% of voters who claim to be undecided will see it for what it is ... a purely political ploy.

Americans see what they're paying at the gas station &/or supermarket; they can look around at their relatives & friends and see the economic suffering that's going on. I doubt they're going to say that after 45 months of a failed presidency, this guy deserves another term based on a suspicious one-month report.

In fact, maybe some of them who were either going to vote 3rd-party or sit out the election since they're not that enamored with Mitt, either, may get so p!ssed off at this administration's latest impersonation of a banana republic, that they'll cast a vote for Romney!

Your co-workers may be a lost cause.

Now being the obstinate cuss I am, what I might do is say to no one in particular as you pass by one of them is: "We've always been at war with Eastasia" and keep walking by. Or take the direct approach 'around the water cooler' and say: "1984 was supposed to be fiction not a 'How To' guide."

If you get no response they're brain dead and I'd check their Engineering Degree to see if isn't bogus. Engineers are supposed to be logical and should immediately spot numbers that look out of whack. These co-worker 'professionals' of yours sound more like Architects. ;-)

[as we say in 'the industry': 'The difference an Architect and God is that God doesn't think he's an Architect.'}
