In yet another example of the blurring of the lines between civilian police and US military forces, Columbia, South Carolina police “officials” have announced that US Military Police from Ft. Jackson will be on the streets alongside civilian law enforcement after the South Carolina-Georgia football game this Saturday night, October 6. According to reports by WISTV, Columbia will be spending more than $11,000 worth of overtime for 50 officers who will be placed in the Five Points and Vista areas after the game. The teams will be made up of University of South Carolina Campus Police, Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and Military Police from Ft. Jackson. The plan will involve barricades, surveillance cameras, DUI checkpoints, and even observation towers “to keep the crowd under control.”

Posse Comitatus is not absolute, and there are benefits on both sides of the limiting factors in its use.

Which is the point I want to make. Americans have a lot of respect for the military which is why they spend so much money to keep it strong and volunteer to serve in it. As soon as the military becomes misused by local, state or federal politicans as a domestic police/occupying force, that will be the end of the military’s support.

The military should resist taking on a domestic personna and role except in extreme emergency. The military evacuating the idiots stuck in the arena during the storm was a great domestic use of the military. Them occupying New Orleans was a disaster for the military’s reputation.

I would guess that there will be a lot of servicemen attending sporting events in that area.

No argument. However, I'm sad to point out that people get the government that they deserve. There is no protection if civilian authorities are ignorant or evil. The U.S. military isn't going to spend its money on curriculum to teach its limitations......if they are not mandated to do so (also coming from elected officials). I had a friendly debate here on FR with a former JAG, and he couldn't understand that even though all military folks take an Oath to defend the Constitution: THERE IS NO CURRICULUM OF PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION (PME) on how to do so in practical terms. None. Zero. Nada.

In conclusion, Katrina exposed what is missing, and it is up to the electorate to choose people that will through due dilligence, ensure that all parties are within Constitutional and US Law boundaries: and they are trained to do so. Good discussion.

Almost all the troops at the airports post 9-11, especially anyone actually empowered to do something about a threat, were National Guard in a Title 32 status.

Considering troops are under the UCMJ and not under civilian laws this is a very dangerous situation.

It's not illegal for MP's to patrol the streets so long as their exclusive interest is in policing active duty soldiers.

I was assigned to patrol the streets of a small town outside a military post in California back in the 60's. In Germany, we patrolled the streets, again only focusing on military personnel. But that was West Germany a long time ago.
