Welcome to the new school lunch at West Springfield High School and schools across the nation – healthier, but not without controversy. “Bland,” said Daggett of his spuds.
This fall schools began a three-year process of phasing in new school lunch and breakfast regulations set by the federal government.
The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is designed to get kids to eat more fruits, more vegetables, smaller portions, less salt, fewer calories.
“There are very specific requirements,” said Julie Dougal, food service director at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham. “They tell us how many green vegetables, orange vegetables, how many legumes.”
Most schools have long anticipated the changes. “We haven’t had soda in the schools for years,” said Matthew Hoagland, food services director at the South Hadley public schools.
“A lot of the manufacturers were already coming out with whole-grain items,” said food services director Joseph Lecuyer of the Agawam schools.
Reception has been mixed. For younger children, the transition is easier. For older students, it can be a problem.
Some of the complaints are of the can’t-tell-me-what-to-do variety, in line with the abuse heaped on New York Governor Michael Bloomberg for his proposal to ban sales of sugary sodas larger than 16 ounces.
Kids miss their desserts and nacho chips.
But some criticism is gaining support. Kieran Moriarty, 17, of West Springfield, has a problem with the smaller portions. He has “practice and games after school,” and the current portions are just not enough. “Last year we had 12-inch wraps,” he said. “This year they’re 10 inches.”

I'm so glad my school was not part of the national lunch program, even before Moochelle Obama got involved. They could serve what the students wanted, not what the government told them to.

Low salt diets increase the likelyhood of heart disease. The study results were discussed here on FR a couple months back. “Salt, we hardly knew thee”, or something like that.
They’re setting these kids up for serious future problems.
The wise ones will bring their own salt.
The kind ones will share it with their friends.
Talk about it commin’ back to bite you in your arse....

There needs to be a nationwide out cry about this travesty. Where are the Registered Dietitians, Pediatric Doctors and Nurses? I’m just a nurse that worked in a children’s hospital and I know this is insanity. Where is someone with an actual voice to call this administration out? I know it’s not me. I remember once long ago, like now, we had taxation without representation....

My BIL overnighted at a State campground out West. The next morning, a busload of kids arrived and stopped to have lunch next to them.

Baked french fries are teh suck. I’d rather eat plain boiled potatoes than a baked fry.
Boiled potatoes go great with hamburger and beans, btw. Just thought I’d share that little culinary nugget from my childhood. :-)
Nobody’s asking the REAL question — why the hell are the schools providing lunches in the first place? Go eat whatever pleases you... the entire sector of the economy depends on junk food and their customers. The same argument I use to analyze tobacco and any drugs for that matter. It should be about CHOICE... if you decide to take in junk food (or cigs or drugs), it is your choice and hopefully the government will not waste tax payer money on you with its communist healthcare.
The government should stay the hell out of everything except killing terrorists.
Let it be. Let it fester. Nothing like intrusive expensive goverment to make people think.
What the welfare lunch crowd doent realize is that soon food stamps will be only able to purchase the same kinds of food tht are found in leftist lunchrooms.

I make great baked steak fries all the time. They are baking potatoes cut in eights, sprayed with olive oil and liberally drenched in lemon pepper. I’m sure the Michelle version is no oil and no lemon pepper.

BTW, Romney or someone should be running an ad telling what the GLF was, and how centrally commanded economic planning directly killed 40 million people, and end the commercial with Obama’s “Forward” logo, followed by a question mark.
