UC San Francisco performs kidney transplant for illegal immigrant after thousands support his cause

OAKLAND -- Seven years of waiting are over for Jesus Navarro, an illegal immigrant who finally received a new kidney after his story motivated one man plus thousands of others to fight on his behalf for a transplant.

Navarro, 36, was recuperating at his small Oakland apartment Thursday with his wife and daughter after the successful transplant last week at UC San Francisco Medical Center. The hospital became embroiled in controversy nine months ago after Navarro came to believe -- despite having private health insurance, despite his wife's pledge to donate her own kidney -- that his immigration status doomed his chances of a transplant.

"I'm hoping to be feeling well enough to do all the things I wanted to do but couldn't," Navarro said in Spanish Thursday, after receiving a kidney from an organ donor. More than anything, it means finally being an active, engaged husband to his wife, Angelica, and a doting father to their 3-year-old daughter, Karen.

Until he lost his job in January, Navarro would spend 12 hours every afternoon and night tethered to a dialysis machine then wake before dawn to leave for his job as a welder at Pacific Steel in Berkeley.

"He never had time for us," said Angelica Navarro of her husband of eight years, "just for the machine."

Navarro's story went viral in January after this newspaper wrote about his plight, spurring Donald Kagan -- a 47-year-old San Ramon man who received a new kidney from a Nicaraguan immigrant -- to take up his cause.

"Just because you're an immigrant doesn't mean you don't have a right to a lifesaving transplant,'' Kagan said.

It’s not like UC Berkley is supported by US taxpayers ... oh, wait; I do believe it is.

There is a waiting list for these organs, thus it’s quite likely that a US citizen, who pays taxes - has or will die, because his “turn” was given to an illegal.

Funny, no mention of the lifelong regiment of anti-rejection drugs that this illegal citizen will have to take. Who is going to pay for those drugs?

The same suckers who paid for this operation - the US taxpayer.

If a free country if you wanted to commit your money to help an illegal alien get a kidney transplant, you would not be stopped.

I’m pissed that he didn’t bother to learn English, which would be a good step towards citizenship. While he is recovering, it would be a good time to learn English.

Ask them, all 100,000 of them who supported the transplant on the leftist website.

I’m sure that they all contributed the “max” to his operation and care. NOT!

Jesus Navarro, an illegal immigrant who finally received a new kidney...

"Just because you're an immigrant doesn't mean you don't have a right to a lifesaving transplant,''

1. I'm sure it's the "illegal" not the "immigrant" part of the equation that causes consternation.

2. If this was an American illegally in Mexico, I guarantee there would be no public outcry to arrange a transplant. The general sentiment would be "die in jail, gringo," and that's just what would happen.

And how many American citizens were bypassed for this to happen?,p> The "Domino Effect" applies.

This bumps the next person back one slot, then the next, and the next, etc.

Somewhere back along the waiting line is the person (or persons) who just doesn't have the extra time and will die because of this insanity.

And here my step-brother, fighting advanced renal failure, cannot get a kidney....but a Criminal Illegal Alien can get one?

But it is just not my step-brother....there are probably thousands of American citizens ahead of him that could have used that kidney...but instead went to a Criminal Illegal Alien

Illegal Alien Amnesty is Anti-American Bigotry

That kidney could have gone to an American....instead it went to a Criminal Illegal Alien. there are not enough organs to go around for those that need them

If they so wanted to commit money to help an Illegal Alien...they could have bought a kidney in his home country and flown him back there.

The article left me with the notion that the kidney came from his wife.

Was I wrong?

” “I’m hoping to be feeling well enough to do all the things I wanted to do but couldn’t,” Navarro said in Spanish Thursday, “

Legal Americans never suffer from this problem.
