Mitt Romney: I would arm Syrian rebels
Guardian ^ | 8th October 2012 | Ewen MacAskill

Posted on 10/08/2012 12:29:14 AM PDT by Zajko

Mitt Romney will call for an escalation of the conflict in Syria by arming rebels with the heavy weapons needed to confront president Bashar al-Assad's tanks, helicopters and fighter jets.

Romney is to make the proposal on Monday in what his campaign team has billed as a major foreign policy speech in Lexington, Virginia.

In extracts published in advance, he opened up the prospect, if he becomes president, of a US-Iranian proxy war being fought in Syria.

"Iran is sending arms to Assad because they know his downfall would be a strategic defeat for them. We should be working no less vigorously with our international partners to support the many Syrians who would deliver that defeat to Iran – rather than sitting on the sidelines," he said.

The proposal would mark a significant shift from Barack Obama's administration's policy of trying to keep the conflict a low-intensity one amid fears it might turn into a regional war. Obama is putting pressure on Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the main backers of the rebels, to restrict the supply of weapons to small arms.

The Republican presidential candidate has made several attempts at establishing his credentials to be commander-in-chief but those speeches made little impact. Against the background of his win over Obama in last week's debate, the Romney campaign team is hoping this speech will be better received.

The speech is aimed at countering critics who say he has not had much to say so far about foreign policy and given little indication of the lines he would pursue as president.

Interesting, if true. Thoughts, anyone?

He should stay the HELL out of there. No good can come of it, and if true, is more in line with the Arab Spring crap.

And interesting choice of words in the opening line: ‘Mitt Romney will call for an escalation of the conflict....’ ....you do wonder if Obama had said the same thing, whether the article would instead have begun with ‘Obama will call for a speedy resolution of the conflict....’

Correct. We need to stay out of those countries, let the UN deal with with them. One sodomized and murdered diplomat is enough to tell me we will never win their hearts or minds. And after we help them, they will just turn on us like Egypt, and the Afghani recruits that are killing our servicemen. It is time to worry about the US, not these third would shiite holes that have been nothing but trouble since day one. Screw Mohamed and his murdering followers..

Obama is ALREADY arming the Syrian rebels. I’ve read numerous articles talking about his “secret” support.

So Romney wants to do what Obama is already doing, which we shouldn’t be doing at all.

Wait, isn’t that a pattern?

when two enemies are fighting, I see nothing wrong with sending them weapons-preferably weapons with a limited shelf life.

Not if the rebels are the same ones that took over Egypt and libya. Other than Israel I don’t see anyone over there who is worth one cent of our tax dollars.

Good grief. We need to get all our money and troops OUT of those hell-holes. I don’t want any other troops killed over there until we get rid of the brass that is enabling sodomy and the killing of our troops like flies because they tie their hands behind their back.

We need to get the PC out of the military (Mao’s invention) and get back to segregation of men and women like WWII. Sodomy should be a felony as any sexual transgressions. Character matters—esp. in military.

Then we need to get our military back to where Virtue is promoted in the ranks-—as Machiavelli stated was necessary. We need JUSTICE in the military—(a virtue) and kick out anyone who embraces Vice. Clean up the cesspool that zero and his sodomites have inflicted on this country.

We also need to get rid of the Marxist ideology forced on our troops—and the stupid idea that men and women are interchangeable. Alan West should be in charge to reorganize all the damage done to collapse our military and disillusion them. Zero wants all men to be sex objects for the sodomites (like in his gay bath house) or else they will be kicked out of the military for being intolerant of homosexual sex. They have to have Pride in anal sex now—wouldn’t our WWII vets be “thrilled”. (Disgusting)! It will be just like Hitler and his SA Brownshirts. Homosexual orgies—and they even used the Hitler Youth. Or is he after the Samurai model....can maybe hook up the Boy Scouts or something with the military.

Zero does want the sodomites to lead the Boy Scouts—like they had in Germany in the early 1900’s where they had orgies with the little boys in the woods. It was so much fun after all. Sodomy was “Good” and it was the National Vice of Germany. Ushered in Hitler and his perverted boys. Vice does that after all—as noted by Machiavelli. Degeneracy leads to degeneracy. We are supposed to promote Virtue—Good!

We need Unity in the military. Promoting Vice will destroy it. Mixing women with the men will destroy cohesion also, and so will putting in homosexuals who are major predators. Even with DADT, they had homosexuals attacking men in their beds. So utterly SICK. Our men should not have to put up with the dysfunction, evil, and immaturity of such degenerates.

Why is he shooting himself in the foot after gaining the momentum during the debate? He also said in this article that he supports a Palestinian state. No - Mitt - NO! This is anti-Biblical. Now, I feel discouraged about him. Seems we are screwed whoever wins.

Is Romney listening to idiot McCain advice?

There has never been a conflict that McCain didn't want to jump into.

I hate the fact that Obama and Hilary are arming the Rebels, but would have to jump on board with support when Romney arms the Rebels.

The same nausea you’re feeling reading this article is the same nausea Obama could use to get elected.

I don’t trust the Guardian to accurately report on Republican presidential candidates. So this article is probably a poor starting point for discussion.

But if true, there’s a lot of possible unintended consequences.

It sounds good to oppose Iran and weaken an enemy of Israel.

But what if that means supporting an Islamist rebellion that may be even worse, and that may crush christian minorities?

I don’t trust glowing sympathetic press accounts of Arab Spring, Muslim Brotherhood, and FSA.
