Darden tests limiting worker hours as health-care changes loom (Red Lobster/Olive Garden/LongHorn)
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | October 7, 2012 | Sandra Pedicini

In an experiment apparently aimed at keeping down the cost of health-care reform, Orlando-based Darden Restaurants has stopped offering full-time schedules to many hourly workers in at least a few Olive Gardens, Red Lobsters and LongHorn Steakhouses.

Darden said the test is taking place in "a select number" of restaurants in four markets, including Central Florida, but would not give details. The company said there has been no decision made about expanding it.

In an emailed statement, Darden said staffing changes are "just one of the many things we are evaluating to help us address the cost implications health care reform will have on our business. There are still many unanswered questions regarding the health care regulations and we simply do not have enough information to make any decisions at this time."

I have seen the future and it is multiple part time jobs for everyone.

It will become the norm for people to have their “morning” and “evening” jobs. Neither will amount to more than 30 hours a week, but everyone will have to work at least two jobs to make ends meet.

Goodbye 40 hour work week.

Goodbye quality family time.

Hello more commuting and gas usage.

The Law of Unintended Consequences is a b!tch.

“Darden is “greedy”.

That is what half of Obamacare is intending. It is a great way to demonize evil insurance companies, evil employers and the private sector in general. The policy is forcing costs up and quality down, and it has built in scapegoats!

It is truly evil.

It wouldn’t bother me so except for the fact this fellow is a big-time nobama supporter and gives nobama $$$$. Otherwise, that’s business.

Another reason ZerOcare must be repealed.

This will give the Bolshies an opportunity to holler for single payer.

I bet the DIM CEO isn’t cutting his hours so he won’t have insurance.

IDK whether he's a Dim or not but here's an elementary lesson of life: He who pays the piper calls the tune. Deal with it.

The CEO of Darden is a huge Obama supporter (he is African-American but he did donate money to McCain as well). He was supporting both parties but switched a majority of his money to Obama when Obama surged in the polls and then won the election.

Supposedly he almost took a job in Obama’s administration. The company just finished ‘catering’ to Michelle Obama’s nutrition policy and now you will eventually have to get parent’s ‘permission’ to order fried at their restaurants.

The company constantly meets with people from D.C. about policies. And Darden is now exempt from the Healthcare law.

******

Michelle Obama said Thursday that a pledge by the Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants and their sister chains to serve healthier meals is a “breakthrough moment” for the industry.

Darden Restaurants Inc. is pledging to cut calories and sodium in its meals by 10 percent by 2016, and 20 percent over a decade. Among promised changes for children: no more french fries. A fruit or vegetable side will become standard with kids’ meals. One percent milk also will be served, including free refills, unless an alternative drink is ordered.

“With this new commitment, Darden is doing what no restaurant company has done before,” said the first lady, who joined executives of Orlando, Fla.-based Darden for the announcement at an Olive Garden restaurant in Hyattsville, Md., just outside Washington.

******

Among the waivers recently granted were for employers like Darden Restaurants, which operates the Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurants, for 34,000 of its workers. Federal officials have granted 111 waivers to employers, insurers and union plans, who are responsible for covering about 1.2 million people.

Darden said the waiver would allow it to offer employees access to affordable coverage as the health care law is started.
