The true history of the US government’s dealings with the Indians is one of lies, deceit and manipulation. And a lot of them, especially those off reservations, have not forgotten. A lot of light skinned American Indians who can pass as white do so because they don't trust the government and don't want to be on a government role. It was bad once, it can be again.
