911 Calls Go Unanswered During Minneapolis Shooting

Emergency communications officials say some of the 911 calls made during a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company went unanswered.

Communications director Heather Hunt says as many as six people who made 911 calls hung up when no one answered. It's one of the reasons why the city will set up a recorded message to play if 911 callers don't get an answer within 10 seconds. The recording will tell the callers to hang on until an operator is available.

The Star Tribune says 16 calls related to the shooting at Accent Signage System were answered. And police responded within 5 ½ minutes, faster than the average response time.

The Sept. 27 shooting left six people dead, including the gunman, and three wounded. It was Minnesota's deadliest workplace shooting.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some union-sponsored rule that all the operators take their break at the same time so that no one has to deal with extra call volume when someone else is on break at a different time.

Considering the probable extremely high volume of 911 calls during that shooting, the fact that only 6 people got no answer is really no cause for alarm.

During the attack on the WTC on 9/11, how many calls to 911 went unanswered ?

What a relief! They showed up before he had time to get off more than a hundred or so rounds.

Yep, that'll do it.

Maybe, in the quest for higher and higher service to the community, they should go video, and put a camera in the toilet stall so the caller can watch the operator wipe her butt. Proof positive that the "an operator [will soon be] available.

If you are being attacked with a knife or a gun...press 1. If you have been slightly inconvenienced at a McDonald’s drive through ... press 2. If you are looking for your Obama phone ... press 3.
