There is a theory that they used vacuum tubes to protect against EMP pulses. The MIG-25 wouldn’t have been vulnerable to them.

My first steps in electronics were done with vacuum tubes. Transistors were around, but I just didn't have access to them for experiments.

In 1970's there was nothing wrong with using a tube-based radio. Many people when hearing "tubes" are probably thinking about something like this - big and fragile. But in reality by that time subminiature tubes already existed, and they were very competitive with early transistors. They easily operated into VHF (and later all the way into millimeter wave,) they were resilient to EMP, they had low noise, and they could be manufactured in any quantity on simple equipment. My first receiver was using just one tube, and it worked very well. You couldn't do that with a single transistor of that era; its h21 sucked, and it was all over the map. Development of ICs led to invention of many reliable and repeatable circuits that threw transistors at the problem; in the end we got the OAs of today, as well as other BJT and FET based analog circuits.

Of course today the quantity converted into quality. Modern DSP-based radios cannot be implemented with tubes. But in 1970's it was a very reasonable, albeit conservative, solution. Today vacuum tubes remain the only viable candidates when you need at least tens of kW of RF power, and when you need lots of power at lots of GHz. Tubes like TWT are operating on unique principles and are offering incredible gain. Tubes called "magnetrons" are powering all our microwave ovens - and plenty of radars. Tubes are not dead yet; semiconductors are doing very good in small signal environment, but they have nothing to offer when you need a 100 kW (V)HF amplifier. Solid state PAs exist for 10 kW, for example; they use power combiners; I worked with those, but the cost of them may make them uncompetitive when the tube-based amplifier needs only one or two glass or ceramic tubes.

Mig-25 was far from being that much an UFO hi-tec thing but vaccuum tubes were there on purpose.
First reason it was an extremely fast Mach3 aircraft. Flying that fast means a lot of heat from air friction. Semi-conductors and microchips as a more advanced alternative to tubes aren’t 100% reliable in that environment.
Second reason it was designed to repell a first strike with B-58 and B-70 bombers. It means operations in a conditions of a nuclear exchange. And vacuum tubes are absolute immune to EMP effects.
Third reason Mig-25 was a huge bird. It could easily carry heavier tube electronics.

At the end it proved a pretty effective even decades after phased by original users.
Iraqi’s claim Mig-25s radars had a nice range and easily burned through jammers. It is rumored Mig-25 had a first kill in a Gulf Was (USN F-18).

Interesting that this happened on the 27th anniversary of the US Navy intercepting an Egyptian 737 carrying the Achille Lauro terrorists: 27 years ago today, the Achille Lauro incident: when the U.S. Navy forced an Egyptair Boeing 737 off course

Just wanted to point out that world wars solve two very crucial problems for the socialist/marxists.

1: Reset the whole economic collapse thing to zero - since countries at war can’t be expected to go good on bank loans to enemy countries.

2: Directly address the whole overpopulation issue.

Now before the accusations of tinfoil start flying, the Socialist/Marxists of the world have done it all before. And lest we forget, their great half-white hope is about to lose big. And their plans go south with him.

Gee...I wonder if their is a connection between the ramp-up of hostilities at this particular juncture for a reason...

To better understand what happened in Libya, you must first understand the context in which it took place. Ambassador Stevens was probably at least as valuable as a U.S. intelligence asset/operative as he was a diplomat. He operated the Iran desk early in his career and eventually became one of our top “go to” experts on all things Iran. Mr. Stevens served in countries throughout the mid-east before eventually settling in Syria for several years. He was well known and respected in the region. He also lived in Washington D.C. for several years while serving as the Director of Multilateral Nuclear and Security Affairs. His little black book with the contact numbers for the good and bad actors and their agents had become pretty extensive; but… here’s where the plot thickens. It appears that Mr. Stevens might not have initially entered Libya to stop the flow of weapons, but to help funnel them under the direction of higher ups in the Obama regime. He was tasked with coordinating, overseeing and facilitating the movement of the rebel fighters from across North Africa through eastern Libya.

The troops were armed with weapons from Gaddafi’s extensive hidden arsenals and spirited to staging areas in the Syrian refugee camps in Turkey. If this administration had needed to go to Congress over the last year and ask for money and troops to start a war with Russia, on Syrian soil do you think they would have gotten it? Not a chance, the electorate would never have put up with it, but, this administration’s handlers didn’t need to. They just got creative. Does Iran-Contra come to mind, anyone? All they have done thus far is ask for a few paltry millions for administrative costs to “support the Syrian Freedom Fighters.”

From up thread. This is bound to get really complex and very dirty. The Russians are pished.Obama is playing with fire, but the question is Stephen John and Fred, will a war with Syria and a cold war with Russia and China in favor of the World Caliphate of Obama and King Faisal be the October surprise of Islamic world conquest? Things may shortly get very dirty.

OBAMA = One Big Ass Mistake America. And a potential nightmare for the whole world. The man is insane and only evil can come of it, if the worst doesn't happen it will only be because he's been locked into a rubber room.

Obama has caused us deep trouble all over the world. He is an unwanted child, and spoiled rotten all of his life. He is unstable, and a Marxist and a Muslim. ANYTHING could happen.
NOTHING is beneath him, and NOTHING he might do would surprise me. He will probably lose this election, because too many Americans now know who and what he is. If he starts a war?

What you can be sure of, is that even if Obama loses, he has several months to badly damage America, or start a war, internal or external.

Here is an update on the Syrian plane story with more information on the cargo and diplomatic contact between Turkey and Russia.

So far the story says the plane was Syrian. But the Russians know as well as anyone that if weapons get caught on a civilian transport then the normal international protections of civil vehicles goes out the door. Shep’s just now saying that the cargo wasn’t weapons but nevertheless war material, radios, etc. And if the NATO Turks want us to help they had best do their part to keep the new stuff out of Syria.
