Report: Illegal Drivers Behind High Hit-And-Run Rate In LA [Los Angeles]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The number of hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles is four times higher than the national average, with one in five fatal crashes involving an unlicensed driver, according to a new report.

Don Rosenberg, the founder of UnlicensedToKill.org, told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO that an estimated 750,000 illegal immigrants live in the L.A. area and those who drive could pose “an immense threat to society”.

“The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports unlicensed drivers are five times more likely to kill, they will flee the scene over 50 percent of the time, five times more likely to drive drunk,” said Rosenberg.

In a whitepaper compiling statistics of hit-and-run accidents, Rosenberg found that unlicensed drivers were involved in more than 7,600 fatal crashes — about 20 percent of fatal crashes nationwide.

There were an estimated 21,000 hit-and-run collisions that were reported as “accidents” in Los Angeles in 2010 alone, according to the study.

“In Los Angeles in terms of hit-and-runs, it’s way outside the norm,” said Rosenberg. “On a national level, there’s about 11 percent of traffic collisions end up being hit-and-runs…in Los Angeles, it’s 50 percent.”

Rosenberg, whose son was killed by an unlicensed driver in November 2010, said the actual number of hit-and-run accidents by unlicensed drivers may be much higher because the LAPD does not take a report if no one is injured.

“You’ve got a very high concentrated population of illegal aliens in Los Angeles; they drive,” he said. “Matter of fact, the police chief actually encourages them to drive as long as they buy insurance.”

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told a group of Los Angeles Times reporters in February that the state of California should issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants to help reduce the number of hit-and-run accidents.

They don’t buy insurance. I was rear ended by one.

If they've got to kill anyone, I hope its those who support their presence here in my country.

YA THINK???? WOW, such profound wisdom. Of course they hit and run...What`s the downside for them? I wish we could saw off California..Sorry, I just do. It will take a revolution to get it back. Hell, it`s looking that way for all states.

There was a news item a few weeks ago that the Texas Dept. of Transportation had conducted a survey and found that Mexicans driving in Texas did not know that there was a law against drunk driving. And they certainly drive drunk every weekend, causing deaths in families across the state.

Yep, In there backward culture it`s called “Machismo”, If they admit they are too drunk to do something, it`s not macho...If you check into that term you will understand how stupid they are. Remember, Mexico City is the best they have done.

'They don’t buy insurance. I was rear ended by one."

My brothers car was totaled by a group of them. Some were caught trying to flee the scene but their truck was on its side where they flipped it. The rest got away. What happened to them? Nothing. They claim no assets and they can easily change names or leave the country easily. My brother was out the deductible (which he could ill afford) and the insurance company was out a car which counts against my brother even though the wreck was caused by the other party.

That happened to my buddy in Phoenix where it’s also very commonplace.

He had a gun, but wasn’t comfortable with trying to shoot to stop the offender.

Luckily he wasn’t hurt.

Yep, that's right. This is the drivel the current police chief spews.

Don't follow the law and return them to Mexico, just make them quasi legal.

I'd be interested to know how he plans to reduce bank robberies. Register everyone at Macys?

One of my colleagues at work was creamed by a hit and run driver while riding his bike. He’s still in the hospital two weeks later. They’ll never catch the SOB who did it to him. There’s basically no enforcement of the law here any more. We’re on our own.

Our own public officials have turned against the citizenry.

” They claim no assets and they can easily change names or leave the country easily.”

Yep

Many have multiple ID’s. If they “burn” one, they use the other.

I agree. The current Los Angeles County sheriff is just as bad or worse too.

I don’t think either department is worth a hoot these days.

It seems like it’s almost anything goes. It’s a real shame.

>>> "I wish we could saw off California..Sorry, I just do..."<<<

The only reason California exists is to keep the ocean waves from washing away Arizona sand.
