Noonan: Confusing Strength With Aggression (Noonan nails it)
wsj ^ | 10/12/2012 | peggy noonan

Last week Mr. Obama was weirdly passive. Last night Mr. Biden was weirdly aggressive, if that is the right word for someone who grimaces, laughs derisively, interrupts, hectors, rolls his eyes, browbeats and attempts to bully. He meant to dominate, to seem strong and no-nonsense. Sometimes he did—he had his moments. But he was also disrespectful and full of bluster. "Oh, now you're Jack Kennedy!" he snapped at one point. It was an echo of Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle, in 1988. But Mr. Quayle, who had compared himself to Kennedy, had invited the insult. Mr. Ryan had not. It came from nowhere. Did Mr. Biden look good? No, he looked mean and second-rate. He meant to undercut Mr. Ryan, but he undercut himself. His grimaces and laughter were reminiscent of Al Gore's sighs in 2000—theatrical, off-putting and in the end self-indicting.

I have just realized the problem with the debate: it was the weird distance between style and content, and the degree to which Mr. Biden's style poisoned his content.

In terms of content—the seriousness and strength of one's positions and the ability to argue for them—the debate was probably a draw, with both candidates having strong moments. But in terms of style, Mr. Biden was so childishly manipulative that it will be surprising if independents and undecideds liked what they saw.

National Democrats keep confusing strength with aggression and command with sarcasm. Even the latter didn't work for Mr. Biden. The things he said had the rhythm and smirk of sarcasm without the cutting substance.

We had a neighbor who always cackled when you spoke to him... I think his mind was gone and that’s the only way he could interact with anyone.

No matter what you said... ‘good morning’, ‘how ya doin?’, etc... cackle, cackle... It was always the same and went on invariably until we just stopped talking to him. We thought he lost his mind or his hearing ... so he ALWAYS cackled like a lunatic with the hope that he was responding properly to ‘whatever’ was said to him-rather than admit that he didn’t hear us or didn’t understand what we were talking about.

It was his stock response to life and the dead give-away that he was completely OUT OF TOUCH without the least concern for BEING out of touch!

Great comments, reflected the thoughts of my wife and I as we watched.

I am amazed that Biden didn't have enough sense to behave respectfully. This should go down in history as the Biden “Laugh Gaff.”

——— It came from nowhere.——

It was during the tax cut phase of the debate. I think the pre programmed line was uttered in the belief Ryan said Kennedy tax cut increased revenue.

Ryan didn’t actually didn’t say it or perhaps didn’t have the chance to say it, but Biden blurted the pre programmed line any way. His hair trigger misfired

Thank you for this post and sharing your opinion. What you wrote is simple yet very poignant. The only people who probably got a kick out of Biden would be the Kos and DU crowd.
I doubt the undecided voter or those leaning Romney were persuaded by Biden and more than likely completely offended and turned off by his antics.

Ha!!

Our old neighbor was harmless.... but Slow Joe was chosen to give a pretense of formality to the otherwise and completely IRREGULAR and ILLICIT activities of “O’s” administration.

Think of it.... why ELSE would a minority Presidential nominee want such a demonstrably irrelevant and laughably malleable cypher for a running mate?

Bottom line is we were score this like a football game Ryan won 24-21, with Team Obama scoring on a few Hail Marys and Team Romney winning by racking up 300 yards rushing and a few turnovers. Dovetail that to the 35-0 schelacing Obama took in debate #1 and we have continued ‘Mo on our side. Ryan did what he needed to do. Ohio(It is over sorry Rass and MSM), Va, NC, Florida, Colorado are gone for Team Obama, I expect NH, Wisconsin, Nevada and Michigan to be shored up in the next 2 weeks. I think election night we win Ct, Pa and a shocker or two like Washington or New Mexico. Romney needs to keep pressing, keep pushing Obama, keep raising and spending money, keep talking truth..God has wind in our sails.

[ Ms. Raddatz acquitted herself admirably, keeping things moving, allowing the candidates to engage, probing. There was a real humanity to her presence ]

BS, Peggy. She was a biased hag who kept cutting off Ryan whenever he as making a good pont. She was clearly part of the Obama/Biden team.

At least Archie Bunker was right most of the time. This guy is like a kernel of popcorn. You never know when he’s going off or which way he’ll fly when he does.

“Finally Noonan says something for which I can agree. It’s been awhile.”

Yes, but that’s because Peggy is a fence-straddler who sticks her finger in the air before deciding which side she’ll land on. Right now she can feel which way the wind is blowing.

IMO she’s after a speech-writing job for the next POTUS.

Any points he scored on policy, he more than gave away on style.

I don't think he scored any points on substance at all. All we heard were the usual Obamanoid talking points, trotted out one after the other and making no more sense in aggregate than they do individually -- "Tax cuts for the wealthy!" "Grow the middle class!" "We inherited the biggest mess in history!"

Exactly what were the points Biden scored on policy?

Ms. Raddatz acquitted herself admirably, keeping things moving, allowing the candidates to engage, probing. There was a real humanity to her presence. We just saw Jim Lehrer beat up for what was also good work. May her excellence go unpunished.

BS. Raddatz was a terrible moderator--biased and intrusive.

Proverbs 29:8-10

King James Version (KJV)

8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

9 If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

This sums up the debate last night:

“If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.” Proverbs 29:9

From the comments section of the article:

Both debates can be characterized easily in terms of apparel. The first debate revealed that Barak Obama, the emperor, had no clothes. The second debate revealed, Joe Biden, the vice emperor wore a clown suit.
