What annoys me about this entire situation is the school’s response to this boy and his parents. The parents notified the school over and over about the bullying (both verbal and physical). Finally, this kid is tackled and he strikes back at the bully.. so he is the one suspended (and he cannot attend his Homecoming Dance). The bully isn’t suspended.. must have had a good laugh when he was able to go to the dance?! This kid must have a target on his back... to be chased while he was doing an interview (meaning there were adults presents when the other boys felt perfectly comfortable to hurt this boy). I am hoping the media attention to this school and its administration brings some changes.

The only way to stop bullying is for the victim to fight back. The mother should tell her kid never to take a punch and to fight back even if he gets in trouble.

Our schools preach this “Conflict Resolution” crap, which equates the bully to the victim....not treating the bully as a perp of assault. This is a big reason why bullying has exploded...bullies know they can get away with it

And, they end up punishing a victim when they defend themselves. The best way to stop bullying is a strong upper cut that busts up the bully’s lip....mindless PsychoBabble does not work.

The parents also need to start pressing assault charges with law enforcement when their kids are bullied, if the school refuses to take action. And, be persistent until you get charges pressed

I agree. Take the suspension and take any further suspensions. One way around this is the school cannot administer punishment if the behavior occurs off of school grounds. I know a family that was facing something similar to this... so this is what they did. The boy walked to the bullies house and he rang the door bell. The bully answered the door and his son punched him square in the mouth. Then he said, “Bother me at school anymore and I’ll find you when you aren’t in school”. In this particular situation, it worked. However, he was a big kid who didn’t fight back in school for fear of ruining his record (and thus eliminating some college choices). In this case, Preston is a small kid.. I’m not sure it would work.

The students that assaulted preston on camera should have assault and battery charges on them.

It is not a school matter. The assault took place off campus.

“... punishing the victim when they defend themselves”

Agreed. The kids who fear getting in trouble are the “good” kids with something to lose. They are thrown off a sports team, fear of their high school record etc... The bullies don’t fear anything.. they usually aren’t on a sports team, don’t care about their academic records etc. Thus, the only fear they may have is legal action. On a side note, IMHO the only thing this school truly fear is civil legal action. I hate to mention that because I’ll probably get flamed. However, if the school district thinks they may have to pay for this boy’s private schooling.. perhaps the administration will actually do their job. As long as the administration ignores the boy and his parents (and punishes the boy and NOT the bully).. then perhaps some legal representation is in order.

Exactly. Today, you have too many boys being raised by women instead of being taught by their fathers how to defend themselves. And far too many mothers are total fools in this area.

My son’s school had a policy that anyone involved in a fight got suspended. My son got hit and didn’t even get a chance to hit back and they were going to suspend him.

I told my son I was going to go in and sock the principal and he would be suspended too. My son resolved it and never got suspended.

Bullies and the school administrators who protect them, like the one in this story are the reason so many kids bring weapons to school.

I brought a knife to school on more than one occasion back in the late 70’s early 80’s when this type of crap was going on. In my school it was the same, if a bully started a fight with you and you fought back, YOU would get suspended along with the bully.

I made it clear to my son that if someone starts a fight, he can finish it and as far as I am concerned, he won’t get in trouble with me. He may get punished at school but told him that is better than not sticking up for himself. My wife doesn’t agree with that.

His last day of school, someone tried to pick a fight with him nd he decked the kid. He got suspended from the bus for a week. My wife was furious but I told her it was his right.

I am a woman who raised 4 sons alone. I taught them what my parents taught my brothers: Do not start a fight, but hit back if someone hits you. My sons were not scrappers, but they were not picked on either.

One of my older brothers told me this story just recently. He is 76.

Every day, when he got off the school bus, two boys would chase him all the way home. They never caught him, and he would run into the house and lock the door.

Finally, my mother told him not to run, to stand up to the bullies. Next day, when my brother headed for our front door, my mother locked it. He turned around and had to fight back, and they never bothered him again.

Unlike a lot of women, I understand how important it is for a boy to establish where he is in the pecking order and not let himself be placed at the bottom. (Girls establish pecking order, as well, but it does not involve physical strength and bravery.) There are far too many women, especially among teachers, who try to squelch the healthy masculinity in boys.
