Syria Activists: Jihadists Seize Missile Base

Anti-regime activists say jihadist fighters linked to al-Qaeda fought with rebels to capture a Syrian military air defense base near Aleppo.

Videos posted online Friday apparently shot inside the base say Jabhat al-Nusra participated in the overnight battle for the base. The videos show fighters inspecting lines of large missiles.

The base's capture is sure to fuel fears that Islamic extremists are playing a greater role after nearly 19 months of unrest in Syria.

Heh.....ya think?

Another Clinton/Obama foreign policy victory!

Obama inherited a very stable world with fundamental economic instabilities.

Romney will get a double dose of instability. He better be ready. Foreign policy will be a massive challenge. Including Islamist violence on our own shores.

Time to wag the big dog

War is imminent - I see Syria as the ticket to attack Iran. Israel and the U.S. know exactly what they are doing. It is more about what Obama does than says.

The military has been moved into place over the last few months.

Syria and Iran are about the face a bigger war.

Okay let me get this straight...
The attack on the US Consolate in Lbya was a Protest.
Wait it was a Protest about the Anti-Muslim Video.
Wait the Ambassador didn’t request more Security!
Wait Security was requested but the State Dept. denied it. Wait! the State Dept. never denied the requst it was the CIA’s fault.
Wait! if it wouldn’t have been Romney/Ryan talking about it this wouldn’t be...even newsworthy.
Oh Wait! the President and I weren’t told about the request for more Security (but yet Obama could say it was the Video when he was at the UN).
Wait! Joe Biden was just misinformed.
It kind kind of makes your had spin a little don’t it!
I know there are a lot of Fox naysayers out there but I have never heard so many lies since this all happened but here somethng that is true.
Is this smart to have our kids seeing this BS being spewed out by the Lamestream Media who supports our Empty Chair in Chief.
Here’s a news flash for you all IT WAS A FREAKING TERRORIST ATTACK on (Embassies/Consulates are considered) US Soil

Panetta says chemical WMDs in Syria are unaccounted for. That’s why US military advisers that were just rushed to Jordan have chemical protection gear available.

I imagine these SAMs are of Russian origin. The Saudis have the resources to find a team of specialists who can activate these missiles. That would essentially shut down the nearby air base. So if this facility isn't recaptured the Syrians may be forced to bomb it before it's turned against them.

How would Romney help the rebels more (as he accuses Obama of not doing) without running the same risk of arming Al Qaeda, or of having to put US boots on the ground as Ryan said last night was not the plan.? My son could end up there after he is through in Afghanistan, so I really would like better ideas.

In my opinion, rather than the US arming murky rebel groups, the best thing the US could do would be to prevent the Iranians and Russians from arming the Assad forces.

Easier said than done, of course. But just this week the Turks interdicted a plane from Russia carrying weapons for Assad. They were probably tipped off with NATO/US intelligence.

The Iranians are using Iraqi airspace to fly lots of weapons to Syria. If we could prevent them from doing that, it would be a big blow to Assad.

Ironic, isn't it. If America was really the evil imperialist nation that our enemies (like Obama) accuse us of being...

we would be able to prevent them from doing that. Cause we'd still be in charge there.

Maybe we're too good for our own good.

To be fair, he meant the actual weapon design itself. The missiles at the base appear to be old SAMs from the 70s. They would not do the job. Iran has IRBMs and is working on an ICBM. What they lack (for now) is a deployable warhead.

That may not be necessary, since they can construct a crude atomic weapon and place it on one of their cargo ships, a passenger plane, or even one of their old Russian subs.

Problem is....the Iranians are reported to have a compact warhead design. According to many reports and NYT writer James Risen, the Iranians obtained a warhead design in the 90s when Clinton authorized Operation Merlin.

The CIA (allegedly) ran this op in an attempt to send the Iranians down the wrong path. They employed a former Soviet scientist to provide faulty blueprints. Problem is, the scientist gave the Iranians the design and the proper corrections. All they need now is the material to assemble it. Perhaps that explains Netanyahu's redline of weapon's grade material.

In any event, Biden knows they have at least the missile, the raw unrefined material, and the design. He flat out lied and it wasn't the only one in the debate.

Now that the Syrians have really pixxed off the Turks by artillery shelling their civilians, shooting down an airplane and sundry other dumb things, hopefully the Turks will be a lot bolder about interrupting these cross country flights.

Had we not had a Treasonous Media and Democrat Party we could have eliminated a lot of these dangers when Bush was in office. By turning the majority against the elimination of our enemies it allowed a lot of the terrorist infrastructure to escape. We are watching it now take over Egypt, Syria, Libya and grow in other parts of the ME and Africa. And The Disaster is either clueless or deliberately abetting its regrowth.

If the Iranians have had the compact warhead design since the 90’s, then how on earth can we / “our intelligence” be so sure they could not put something together fairly quickly?

Biden seems to think the Iranian nuke scientists and engineers are no more clever than he is.

I agree with your sentiments but the fact of the matter is there is almost nothing, anywhere, that we can avoid getting involved in in, one way or the other. Even our inaction would be an action on one side or the other.

Our best interests here would seem to dictate that we keep Assad in power. As we should have stuck with Mubarek and The Colonel in Libya. If our interest, at one time, could dictate that we ally with Stalin and aid Saddam against Iran, it isn’t a stretch to aid Assad.

Power politics dictates policies which do not always seem consistent with morality or religion; see the British policy in the ME in the 19th century wrt Russia vs the Turk.

The complexity and enormity of the situation there demand The Disaster must go. But RR are not going to inherit a pleasant task, maybe not even a winnable one.
