perhaps we need a petition signer protection law.
such that no person may be discriinated in either public or private for signing a petition.
Much like there is a bankruptcy law that states filing for bankruptcy is protected such that an employer may NOT fire you as a matter of federal law just because you have just filed bankruptcy.

PAY DAY!!! IANAL, but there are several constitutional amendments violated here. Right to associate, freedom of speech, right to petition, and I'm sure some civil rights laws. Could be fun if they get a good lawyer. Could become independently wealthy at the college's expense, sort of like Duke University.
