State Dept. Confirms: Marines on 9/11/12 Were Protecting U.S. Embassy--in Barbados

When terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 of this year and killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, there were no U.S. Marines deployed in Libya to defend U.S. diplomats, diplomatic facilities and classified information and equipment.

However, says the State Department, a Marine Security Detachment was deployed on that day to carry out those duties at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Why is this a story? U.S. Marines guard our embassies in EVERY country. My step-brother has that detail in Honduras. The issue to me is why our Ambassador didn’t have protection when he traveled to the consulate office in Benghazi. (Our embassy in Libya is in Tripoli.)

Maybe Jay-Z or Beyonce were vacationing there and needed protection.

After watching the hearing Issa held about Benghazi, my impression was that it is the host country’s military or police force responsibility to combat this many attackers. Their idea is get the ambassador to a safe room, hold and protect him/her until the host country can contain the protest/attack whatever.

Problem with this approach was the safe room wasn’t smoke proof in Benghazi.

I had always thought Marines at embassies could/would defend with serious firepower if something like what happened in Benghazi went down. What are they allowed to do?

It was laughable when Biden said they had bad intelligence regarding the Libyan embassy attack, yet in the same breath says they have very good intelligence regarding how close Iran is to having a nuke....................two different intelligence agencies?

“that this was a setup that blew up in the Democrat’s faces. Probably able to find his article still over at HillBuzz.”

Interesting. So whatever the outcome was SUPPOSED to be, Hussein had to play out the script he’d been given regarding the youtube video, until he received further orders.

Mr. youtube video director sure was vilified and put on ice fast. No one’s been reporting or asking about him...

Wonder if it’s not so easy to pull Hussein’s strings lately, if it took him what, eight days to completely deny SAYING everything he’d been saying? What was up with that?

That’s a doggone good point. It should be repeated profusely...

Also, and maybe someone who is a weapons expert can explain it to me:

Iran has successfully put three satellites (that I’ve heard of) into orbit. We know they collaborate with North Korea to some degree (but overall are probably ahead of NK, technology-wise.) Yet Biden claims that Iran has no way, in the near future, once they have enough sufficiently enriched uranium, to hit Israel with a Bomb.

Doesn’t this reek of (arrogantly) underestimating one’s opponent?

Should that miserable, very Muslim, president win the election, we ought to get him impeached right away. Four years of an impeached Hussein.

I don't think anybody minds that US Marines guard the Barbados embassy.

The point of the story is that Biden claimed that the ambassador in Libya did not have a Marine security detail because Republicans cut the embassy security budget.

The point is that if they had limited funds, perhaps they should have prioritized better. Like focusing resources on those countries with an active al Qaeda presence openly threatening to attack the our foreign service personnel.

I still think they wanted Ambassador Stevens to get whacked because he knew too much about the assasination of Kadaffy to secure the massive Libyan financial assets [/conspiracytheory]

No they don't. There are quite a few that do not have Marine MSG.

Marine MSG? That’s rather redundantly redundant. I meant to just say Marine Security Guard.

My experience in African embassies is 30 years old. In Djibouti, there were no Marines, but the French pledged to provide protection should winds turn ugly. Ditto N’Djamena, Chad, but it too was crawling with French soldiers and Legionnaires. I worked for a few weeks in the embassy at Mbabane, Swaziland. Talk about a backwater. Now all those embassies are under the protection of the U.S. Marines. With this situation in Benghazi, it is a different ball game. This can be laid directly at the feet of Godzillary. Her head should roll, preferably before 6 Nov.

I needed a reminder of the timeline of Watergate. I suspect others do, too ... from wikipedia:

The Watergate scandal was a political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement. The scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, on August 9, 1974, the only resignation of a U.S. President. The scandal also resulted in the indictment, trial, conviction and incarceration of 43 people, including dozens of Nixon's top administration officials.

The affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) connected cash found on the burglars to a slush fund used by the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, a fundraising group for the Nixon campaign.[1][2] In July 1973, as evidence mounted against the president's staff, including testimony provided by former staff members in an investigation conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee, it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape-recording system in his offices and he had recorded many conversations.[3][4] Recordings from these tapes implicated the president, revealing he had attempted to cover up the break-in.[2][5] After a protracted series of bitter court battles, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes to government investigators; he ultimately complied.

Facing near-certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and a strong possibility of a conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned the presidency on August 9, 1974.[6][7] His successor, Gerald Ford, then issued a pardon to Nixon.

I remember that there was a lot of political turmoil for those two intervening years that is not mentioned in the Wiki article... I bet that many here do remember that.

I wonder if American voters are interested in going through such consternation and turmoil a second time, for the next two years, in a fragile economy? I don't think so, and that is why I believe that BenghaziGate will have an effect of some amount on this election.

It’s a story because the liberals are (including Biden) blaming the lack of security in Benghazi on Republicans for not giving enough money which is total bs.

Now we come up with all that they spent on non-essential areas and left the most essential unarmed. I also believe the administrations lack of knowledge on what happened over there was due to not attending intelligence briefings. Didn’t it take 3 more days or maybe 4 after it happened for the one to even show up for a briefing?

He has attended 36% of intelligence briefings where Bush attended 100% of them. This is his top priority job. Protect our citizens. I am so mad right now!

This is no cover up, it's a bad lie and BIG tragedy bordering on , crud name the offenses.

I cannot believe the culmination of 4 years of blitzing the constitution ends in such negligence, such complacency, such outright stupidity and delusional dissociation but it has. it's in a sense what all conservatives have been waiting for. I hope this ends it. I hope and pray for these scum bags to get what they deserve.

To see finally the implosion that ALL America, all "WE THE PEOPLE" can stand as one and say:

"Screw you, screw your FORWARD socialism bid, screw your economics and screw all your thuggery lies, tomahawk missile wars and MURDER."

Take back our country now !

“Once the attackers attack the embassy grounds... ambassador issues an instruction to the duty Marines: “Defend the embassy and its grounds.”... non-combatants... retreat to a very difficult to penetrate safe room ... Marines ... man four M2 .50 caliber machine guns on the four corners of the roof... engage the attacking vehicle with rocket propelled anti-tank weaponry... as tear or vomit gas ... a substantial number of deceased heathens ... then... 7.62mm belt fed machine guns... USAF ... enroute ... if the heathen regroup there will be far fewer ... invite them to sue us in the International Court of Justice...”

Great run-down of what SHOULD have happened on 9/11/2012 in Benghazi.

One quibble - it would be worth while to note that such an attack IS an “act of war” prima facie.
