VP Debate: Body Language Expert Sees Big Contrast

If Vice President Joe Biden channeled his inner pit bull, Rep. Paul Ryan brought his inner puppy to the debate stage, according to facial expression expert Chris Kowal.

Kowal, an assistant professor at Purdue University, used computer software to analyze the facial expressions produced by the nearly 400 muscles in the human face during Biden and Ryan's face-off.

As Biden's big laughter took Twitter by storm, the computer model lit up with readings of frustration and discomfort—the emotions you might experience laughing at a funeral, Kowal said.

"It's not an uncommon reaction when people see something that really makes them uncomfortable, and frustrated… they might laugh at inappropriate moments," Kowal said. "It was that."

"When I watched him laugh, it was a clear sign that he was frustrated," Kowal added.

When Biden rejected Ryan's arguments as "a bunch of stuff" and "malarkey," the emotional ratings went off the charts.

"When he said malarkey—the passion leading up the comment, the passion and the intensity of emotion was really strong," Kowal said. "He was very angry, very disgusted…sad and all of these three emotions were all in the 'high intense' level."

IMHO, Biden consumed too many adult beverages in the two hours or so preceding the debate. His behavior, verbal and non verbal was that of a DRUNK....

Amazingly bone-headed video has nothing to do with the article.

Bullcrap. I’d wager all of Biden’s histrionics were affectations, not a response to being frustrated.

Precisely. That was obvious in his ability to instantly turn the "hilarity," "frustration," and "anger" on and off.

To me it looked like Biden found 0bama’s stash . . .

The way he was giggling, it must have been some premo stuff.

As an ex-husband I find that very insulting.

Dick Cheney just and explicitly verified that on Hannity.

Will be very interesting to see what the polls show the effect of that “debate”. Betting the spread widens in all but the most blue of blue states.

"This is what their base wanted.... I do think Biden over did it though - as expected."

Yep. Liberals think this is great. Normal people... not so much.

If the Obama campaign is trying to secure their base at this late stage this is a sure sign they are in trouble. What we witnessed last night was borne of panic.

Excellent Point...

The entire Communist agenda will be retired.

Not so much. The GOP is quite full of it’s own progressives.

If they are left to their own devices with Mittens, there will be little difference. The Tea Party is going to have to stay involved and in touch with our elected representatives. There is a lot of damage to be turned back and repealed. It’s not that easy to turn back an abusive machine like Obama built into the government.

I saw someone calm, collected, focussed, serious and above stooping to Biden’s level in the face of Biden’s rudeness. And personally I liked the quiet rebuke, “it would serve the people better if we all stopped interrupting each other” or something like that. Such a polite stilleto thrust must have heaped coals on Biden’s head, to borrow an image from the Gospel.

I don’t know about it being an acting job. I think some of it was, but it looked to me like his anger was only too real. His face was turning very red at a couple of points.

Well you can use dogs, or cats or husbands. I like to use careers. Under that scenario we have Biden=used car salesman and Ryan = fireman.

I used to work for that bunch; ordinarily, I’d agree with you 100%. I was pleasantly surprised to read the article, and find it fairly even handed (didn’t watch the video portion). Best Regards, Sir.

So very pleased to see someone else can speak to Biden’s brain brain surgery, Twice that I know of plus some neck surgery because of the car accident some years ago he alluded to about his wife in the debate.

I wish the candidates’ wives would debate each other. I would watch that.

Conservatives in the Senate will probably need to fight Romney on most of his appointments ~ and that will start on Day One of his regime.
