Shuttle heads toward LA museum [U.S. space program, another scalp on Obama's belt)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 13, 2012 | ALICIA CHANG with Raquel Maria Dillon

...Before Endeavour could travel through the streets, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were hoisted, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities....The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center...

It will move past an eclectic mix of strip malls, mom-and-pop shops, tidy lawns and faded apartment buildings. ....which should have been housed at Space Center Houston. This intended slight by the Marxist punk POTUS will not be forgotten.

I’m a Houstonian living here in LA and get irritated every time this shuttle coming to LA has been in the news. It really was a slap in Texas’ entire face.

Obama's adminstration and his Science and Technology Adviser, John P. Holdren, are de-devolving America and American exceptionalism - NASA is turning "green" as our manned space program is ripped out by the roots and our workforce is scattered to the winds.

Obama and Holdren want to downsized a government agency and promote commercial space (spelled crony capitalism)?

Hardly! They want to destroy everything positive and powerful about the United States.

NY getting even Enterprise makes no sense but California BUILT those shuttles.

Besides, Texas already got Columbia.

I know it’s probably a bit knit-picky in the grand scheme of things... but why are they using a Toyota Tundra to move the Shuttle?

You left out mention of the other green. The green flag of Islam. NASA's new priority. Promoting Islam.

Yeah, but we had FReepers here lauding this great achievement of the shuttle going to Californa, the cutting and planting of new trees and We the People having to foot the bill for the expenses.

Go figure......

Ken Phillips, curator of aerospace science at the California Science Center (Photo by Tessie Borden)

Some shuttle diplomacy helped bring the Endeavour to L.A. - Bringing the shuttle Endeavour to Los Angeles was not a new idea but was conceived in 1991 by California Science Center aerospace curator Ken Phillips. -

".....Phillips sent in the application in March 2009. Ten months later, NASA issued another request for information. The new head of the agency, Charles Bolden, had asked for a reevaluation of the selection process. Bolden wanted the shuttles housed in locations that would draw a large number of visitors — local, domestic and international — to "serve NASA's goal of expanding outreach and education efforts to spur interest in science, technology and space exploration."....

...A NASA aide called Phillips on April 11, 2011, a day before the agency was to announce the winners. Would the Science Center accept the test model if that was the only one available?

Of course, Phillips said.

Then came: If you had a choice, which shuttle would you take?

He wanted one that had actually flown; they were more authentic than the test shuttle......"

California played a role with the Shuttle. NY is the one that should not be getting it.

Houston should have gotten one, Smithsonian should have gotten one, Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Last one probably to Chicago to even out geographic distribution.
Trainer should have gone to Canaveral.

WTH either NYC or LA has to do with space I can’t figure...
