Gloria Steinem: 'The Home in Our Country Is Single Most Dangerous Place for a Woman’ By Penny Starr October 12, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Speaking at an event to mark the 40th anniversary of Ms. Magazine, co-founder and feminist activist Gloria Steinem said that because of domestic violence “the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman” and that ending domestic violence is “the key to world peace.”

“We can understand, you know, where it is we wish to go and also reveal more clearly where it is we are now,” Steinem said at the National Press Club on Thursday.

“For instance, domestic violence, or original violence, has diminished somewhat, but it is true right now that if you added up all the women murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country since 9/11 and then took all the people killed in 9/11, all the Americans killed in Iraq and in Afghanistan, there are more women who have been murdered by their husbands and boyfriends than were collectively killed in those situations,” she said.

“It’s also still true that the average prison sentence for a partner, a male partner who kills his female partner, is less than for a woman who kills in self-dense in the home,” Steinem said.

“It’s still true that the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman – not the street,” Steinem said.

The number of people killed by terrorists in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001 was 2,977. The number of troops killed in Afghanistan total 2,125 and 4,475 in Iraq, according to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. That would bring the total for the attack and the two wars to 9,577 deaths.

They like to talk about “domestic violence” rather than wife beating because so very few husbands hit their wives compared to live-in boyfriends. Always watch how the left manipulates words and don’t fall for their tricks.

This putrid, dried-up, old hag needs to have a discussion with her Maker. She will be held to account.

Studies by (I think) USC or some such, found that women initiate domestic violence a higher percentage of the time than men.

I’ll see if I can find that darned thing.

Yes, a female in the womb (and a male too).

Gloria Steinam must be feeling left out of the conversation these days. What better way to elbow your way into the town hall than to make a jump-the-shark idiotic assertion.

Gloria, honey, you need to spend a year or so in rural Africa, Egypt, Iran, or North Korea. It would reinvigorate and clarify your thinking, which appears to be trapped in 1960's amber. Or, how about hard labor on a subsistence farm for a couple of years? You'd learn to appreciate much more how that arugala found its way onto your bone ware.

If the home is so dangerous, then maybe its time for men to stay home and face the danger while women go off to be the majority of our cops, firefighters, infantrymen, cab drivers, steel workers, miners, farmers, electricians, and all the other traditionally male jobs that try to kill us every day.

It's pretty safe in this house with mr. hummingbird. I'm sorry Gloria S. and her abused sisters have not known bliss in their homes. Really, I am sorry. And, I am grateful for the sanctuary of our home. I wish all could have the same.

Well said. I have been blessed by God with the most wonderful husband and we will be married 32 years in January. He is the single best thing that ever happened to me.

Sounds like Gloria has had it pretty easy her whole pathetic life.

I wonder which one of these women has a promising future politicizing her plight?

The reality is that people of both sexes abuse each other in relationships all the time, and in my view the word ‘love’ is too often cheap and overused. Women abuse men just as often as the opposite, it's just that the method of abuse is different.

I watched my mother belittle my father for almost all of their marriage, telling me recurrently since I was probably 6 or 7 years old that she never should have married my father, other men were interested in her, he was lazy (he worked third-shift in a factory as skilled labor for over 35years and was never unemployed his entire life), etc. etc. She would belittle him to his face recurrently. He came from an abusive home himself, and had physical scars as a result, so even though he had inner strength, he did not have it in him to fight her - and wouldn't leave her. All the while, he pretty much defended her against any and all criticism.

When he died, she wouldn't let him come home from the hospital, and she couldn't even find it in herself to sit there and hold his hand while he laid in a hospital bed dying. He had told me when I visited a month before this (I don't live in the same state) that “I think your mother is getting tired of this. I should probably just die.”. All of this after over 50 years of marriage. To me, she abused him. But I'm sure Gloria wouldn't care.

Domestic abuse is a real problem and needs to be addressed, especially with stiff penalies/prosecution of offenders.

That said, as with any social problems, radical liberal/feminists would likely bring their own solutions to the table, to wit:

A. Most domestic abuse perpetrators are men, so of course “all you have to do” is ban men who live in homes or since the home is dangerous, “simply” ban homes containing men (take your choice).

B. Of course, you could always deport men (and only men) to uninhabited islands, thereby reducing incidents of abuse against women by 98%.

C. Require men to take large doses of tranquilizers daily
and ban all sports/games of aggression as a two-pronged approach.

D. The final solution is to amend the constitution (called the Unequal Rights Amendment) to allow for making eunuchs of any man found (by the government) to be a high percentage risk of being an abuser.

Problem solved.

because of domestic violence “the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman” and that ending domestic violence is “the key to world peace.”

These Leftist utopian idiots get on my nerves.

Someone is always spouting off about achieving world peace. World peace is only achievable by the extinction of the human species. War is part of human nature. War has existed as long as humans have been human (if you believe in evolution it existed in the pre-human species as well).

World peace is a political catch phrase that is intended to give your argument infinite weight. “Oh, who can argue with the need to achieve WORLD PEACE?”

Sorry folks I am not buying your line of crap. If you bring world peace in to your argument you have lost my attention, my respect and as far as I am concerned you lost the debate.

Gloria Steinem: 'The Home in Our Country Is Single Most Dangerous Place for a Woman’

I knew it! I knew it!

When I heard that most accidents happen in the home and most traffic accidents happen within 25 miles of home I moved away from there.

Gloria has just validated my decision.
