COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every week after Labor Day is touted as a critical week in presidential politics. The coming week may actually live up to that characterization.
During the next eight days, President Obama and Mitt Romney will meet for their final two debates — Tuesday night at Hofstra University on Long Island and the following Monday in Florida. At that point, it should be clear whether the momentum that Romney picked up from the first debate in Denver has stalled or whether he continues to gain ground against the president. In the meantime, the front-page headline in Saturday’s Columbus Dispatch should serve as a warning to Obama’s headquarters in Chicago. It read, “Romney on the rise in Ohio.”
Obama advisers were saying earlier in the past week that they believed the post-Denver Romney surge had stopped. But virtually every recent poll since Denver, here in Ohio and in other battleground states, has shown movement toward the Republican challenger. Obama may still lead in enough states to win reelection, but the margins are no longer comfortable.
On Friday night, a huge crowd filled the town square in nearby Lancaster to greet Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, for a joint appearance after Thursday’s vice-presidential debate. Sen. Rob Portman, who is rapidly emerging as the Romney campaign’s most valuable player for his multiple roles as Ohio point man and Obama stand-in for debate prep, joined them on stage.
Romney spoke of seeing a “growing crescendo of enthusiasm” around the country. All candidates say that in the final weeks of a campaign, but there is more than a little truth to it in this case. Republicans are energized in ways they weren’t before, still driven more by their anti-Obama feelings but increasingly happy with their nominee.

Even with Candy "the Chocolate Cow" Crowley moderating, he will be more sure footed than Barack "Mr Choom" Obama.
Romney has studied this stuff for a long time now. Obama's heart isn't really in it.
Given the way these debates have been “moderated” I am surprised one of the upcoming ones isn’t conducted by moochele.
In this debate they are going to throw everything at Mitt Romney. The format, the moderator, and the location will all be in place to work against him. And he’ll win anyway, and that’s why he is going to be our next President of the United States.
Yes, this is a crucial week. It’s the early in the 4th quarter, Romney has scored two TD’s, one by marching the ball downfield on a long 80 yard drive, and another by returning an interception. He’s taken the lead by 10, and he now has the ball on 0bama’s 20 yard line. A TD here and the game is over.
IMHO this is just wishful thinking that 0 will save the day for more socialism. No....this country has had it’s crucial week, in fact 192 of them with this disasterous administration. The hope and change team is merely going to go for the scoarched earth approach, but it is way too late now.
And there is not a single blessed thing the MSM can do about it...Go pound sand, scumbags!
mitt needs to keep the pressure on. the illusion of false concreteness that has been the obama campaign has been exposed. one more nudge, and the whole thing could collapse.
I never thought mittens had this in him. he was never my guy, but there is no quit in the man. he was PREPARED for the first debate. he had better be prepared for the second debate, because they are going to come after him.
The next debate is a “town hall” format. I hope the Romney campaign intel guys are on their toes and monitoring this process, who is selected, what types of questions have been selected etc. I don’t trust Candy Crowley, the lib.

I have watched the last election for the presidency very closely. This from up Canada way. I saw Senator John McCain seemingly throw in the towel. Now the perusal of books by Jack Cashill and now David Maraniss, have given me a fair estimate of the President.
On this debate with Candy Crowley as the moderator, it may well be a pivotal moment.
If President Obama comes out with fire and vigour and is alive with a willingness to trade punches, one might give him a pass. Should he perform as he did the last time out, I can only assume that he simply does not want to win.
A long shot, but the good life certainly awaits him, if he should lose.
One great asset for Mitt is that he is actually a mature adult man - that alone puts him so far out of the average Dom's league that it becomes no contest. Against the likes of Zero and Bite-Me, it becomes even more apparent. The sweet part is that they can't stop the comparison from being made when they have to be on the same stage...
I don't think he has the capacity to do that (though I might be surprised).
When he's not on teleprompter, he's slow and stumbling...professorial at best, clumsy at worst. If he has any fire at all, it is that deeply submerged racial rage.
