(Reuters) - Losing ground to Republican Mitt Romney on a host of issues, President Barack Obama faces a serious challenge to put his re-election bid back on track when the two men face off on Tuesday in their second debate.

Obama's passive performance in their first debate two weeks ago and Romney's subsequent surge have raised expectations for a more fiery encounter at New York's Hofstra University.

The Democratic president's team has been encouraged by the feisty performance of Vice President Joe Biden last week in his debate against Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

Now, with Romney having virtually erased Obama's lead in national polls just three weeks before the November 6 election, Obama is hoping to take advantage of the town hall-style format in Tuesday's debate to make a direct pitch to voters.

We should all be Tweeting to @BarackObama things like:

@BarackObama needs to get in Mitt Romney’s face

@BarackObama needs to show the country that he is the smartest man in the room by laughing at Romney and the people in the audience asking the questions.

@BarackObama needs to do a lot of yelling

It’s encouraging that the left still thinks Biden did well. Obama will try some of the same and only then will he learn what the rest of the country thinks of it. It a week MSM will be complaining about teflon Romney.

I expect Obama to “wow” the newly un-blinded debate watchers with facts and figures about his myriad of new projects and policies he has planned for the second half of his “hard-fought” recovery. If only the obstructionist Grand Old Party will get out of the way.

These will be buoyed by well-placed people and questions, miraculously answered by Obama’s forward thinking plans.

Mitt’s questions will equally be well-placed to highlight his perceived detachment with the plight of the common man.

You may be right. This debate will probably not get as many viewers like the first one.

Considering the audience and questions will be pre-screened...NO, I do NOT think Zer0 will be challenged.

Gallup will pick the "undecided" voters who will ask the quetions...and Axelrod has Gallup where he wants them.

Maybe Obama will get penetrating questions about his favorite color, what he likes for breakfast, what is his favorite animal, etc.

Anyone want to speculate on what horror story about Obama Drudge is going to post tomorrow night to try and spook Obama before the debate? Like he did for Newt, Rick, Obama and Biden before...

Obama and his team - moderator, camera crew and production staff have this 'debate' under control.

Out of a hundred questions offered by citizens and audience and professionals, they'll chose the 6 or 7 questions they ( liberal members of the press) would have asked anyhow. The only difference is the questions will have a 'folksy' feel to them. But they'll deal with abortion - something the public puts at the bottom of their lists - but an issue dem operatives put at he top of their lists...

Which way will the moderator jump? Oh God I wish we could place bets on the MSM... after much thought and soul searching - they they they choose to help the dem. What a hoot. They could save time dropping the pretense of all that soul searching and just jump to where they always land... biased favoring dems.
