WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has lost another high-profile supporter as Anonymous, the hacking collective, said the whistleblowing site had been ruined by egos.
Anonymous, a loose group of internet hacktivists, has been one of WikiLeaks closest allies during the past two years, launching cyber attacks against the sites opponents and, some claim, becoming a source of its material.
...But leading Anonymous accounts on Twitter, which rallied behind WikiLeaks and Mr Assange despite his legal and financial woes, have now withdrawn their support, decrying the freedom-of-information project as a One Man Julian Assange show.
Calling the split the end of an era, Anonymous tweeted: It was an awesome idea, ruined by egos.
.....WikiLeaks this week erected a banner advertisement asking for donations before allowing visitors to access emails purportedly relating to Mitt Romney, the US presidential candidate, and its other archives. Anonymous described the move as meretricious.
The final straw for the shadowy group, which has also supported the Occupy Wall Street movement and the Arab Spring while at the same time attacking companies including Sony and News Corp, appears to have been Mr Assanges dinner this week with pop star Lady Gaga.
Thats great for him but not much of our interest, Anonymous said. We are more interested in transparent governments and bringing out documents and information they want to hide from the public.
WikiLeaks responded on Twitter, saying: Thank you for drawing attention to our donation campaign while we have high costs in military courts. Solidarity. The tweet included a link to its donations page.........

She looks like a witch. Is it already Halloween over there?
Oh wait, she dresses like every day is Halloween...
Meanwhile back in the real, adult world:
Polls tighten as Romney speaks to massive, 11,000 person, Ohio crowd

“(wikileak’s) reply on Twitter included a link to their donation page.”
It’s all about the benjamins.
Just a feeling...but I think in five years....Julian will still be in the Ecuadoran embassy, waiting, and some idiot will have made a successful London musical out of the episode.
Attention whore... and Lady Gaga
Redundant
No offense meant to you, but link is subscriber-only and I don’t see anything in the excerpt about Romney information.... can you provide?
I guess they’ve closed it. It was open earlier. There was NO information given on Romney, other than Assange’s WikiLeaks site was selling it. I suppose you could give Assange some money to find out what it is. But I expect if it was anything at all, David Axerod would have mentioned it by now.
Those documents include the Global Intelligence Files (GI Files) obtained via the December 2011 hack of security firm Stratfor. On Wednesday, WikiLeaks said it would start releasing 200,000 documents related to the US presidential election. This week, specifically, WikiLeaks published "over 13,734 emails referring to republican(s), Romney, RNC and/or GOP, ranging from 3rd January 2011 to 19th December 2011," the organisation said in a statement......"
