Town-Hall Format Could Pose Challenge for Romney
RCP ^

Posted on 10/14/2012 11:40:59 PM PDT by Arthurio

In his first debate against President Obama, Mitt Romney seemed to effortlessly pass his most critical test: appearing to undecided voters as presidential.

The Republican challenger was confident and relaxed as he stood behind his podium, narrowing in just 90 minutes a sizable “stature gap” between himself and the man who has been commander-in-chief for four years.

In Tuesday night’s second head-to-head contest, one of his new tasks will be something Romney has faced throughout the six years he’s essentially run for the nation’s highest office: demonstrating that he feels the pain of regular voters and is able to connect with them on a human level.

Questions for Romney are likely to be of the “gotcha” type while Obama gets the softballs. Then any partisanship can be blamed on the crowd rather than the moderator......

The format may not favor one candidate over the other, but it does favor conservatism over leftism in a big way. This is why Romney won the first debate, and it will be no different in this one.

The case for leftism has always needed revisionist history, pretzel logic, and obsucrantist rhetoric to maintain viability. This administration has put leftism into practice, and the predicted pain is all around.

Obama can be agressive all he wants, but style can only win among the brain-dead vote that he already has. He must sell the benefits of collectivism to those he’s attempted for months to convert, and he hasn’t made the sale.

Romney will win again. Easily.

But lying comes so natural to him, AS it did to BITE-ME.

A “challenge”? Just picture a room full of ObamaPhone recipients and ponytailed 50 year old guys asking “why do you hate working Americans so much?” or “how long will it take you to start a nuclear war in the Middle East?” Then add to that lesbians fornicating with each other in the aisles. What could *possibly* go wrong for Romney?

Candidates can say anything they want in response to questions. Why would a “town hall” format make any difference ?

Barf alert! My 2 cents predicts many of these questions will revolve around “what the government can do for me”.

Exactly! I'll lay odds the ponytail guy from 1992 in Richmond will be there.

I’m sceptical about how balanced this will be.

1. Candy Crowley already said she’d hijack the conversation once a question has been asked. And she’s a lib.

2. The audience will allegedly be made up of undecided likely voters chosen by Gallup. Doubtful. Most likely lib activists claiming to be undecided.

3. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Hussein will be sporting an earpiece to receive info from his handlers.

All we can do is pray and have faith that God is in control.

“Who lets these leftists set up these debates anyway?”

Brent Bozell was on Hannity last week. He said he has “no sympathy” for the GOP when it comes to these lib-led debates. If I understood correctly, he said that the lawyers for both sides meet and agree on the moderator(s). So our side concurs with the moderator and our guy gets browbeaten. If that’s truly how moderators are selected, our side is just stupid.

...demonstrating that he feels the pain of regular voters and is able to connect with them on a human level.

Barry has no connection to "regular" people. There are two groups of people to him - those supporters that he can exploit to promote his agenda and those opposed that he can attack as being against his "helpful" policies.

How can a Town format be a challenge for a man with brains?
Anyone debating obama will win unless they choose not to.

The only unfair advantage I see is, a man will be debating a child.

Look, at a very basic level I have to side with the guy who makes and wins discussions with a board of directors regarding high stakes investments over a guy who bows to a bunch of deadbeats whining for free birth control.

I agree with you, comebacknewt!
Romney should be able to hit the ball out of the park.

How does Obama feel anyone’s pain when he has unemployment figures as high as they have been and his only reaction to to put the folks on unemployment compensation and food stamps? That is not a very good long term plan to resolve the people’s pain.

Great analysis! I would add that Romney did not sneer, eye roll and/or smirk during Obama’s turn and I hope he continues that.

Also regarding “..lemonade-stand level understanding of economics theory..” The successful lemonaders are learning about how to turn a profit - most figure out quickly that giving away lemonade to all ruins any profit - Obama doesn’t understand the concept of successful entrepreneurship on even that basic of a level. I understand your point though - his economic theory is at a child’s level of understanding. This is because of his socialist/communist indoctrination.

The so-called undecided voters will probably be mostly Democrats. Candy Crowley gets the pick the questions—they might as well have David Axelrod pick the questions.
