Remember Pearl Harbor - Save Historic Ford Island Runway

Ford Island is the only Aviation Battlefield in America. It was ground zero on December 7, 1941 when Imperial Japanese Navy forces attacked without warning, an act that brought America into World War II. The Ford Island Runway and the iconic red & white Control Tower, as seen in the movie Pearl Harbor, survived that date which lives in infamy, and were designated as National Historic Landmarks in 1964. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Ford Island one of 11 "Most Endangered Historic Places" in 2001. The US Navy now plans to cover the 300 foot x 4,000 foot runway with 60,000 black photovoltaic panels and surround this historic space with a 7 foot high fence.

Established in 1919 as the Army's Luke Field, this was one of the first military air fields, this is where Amelia Earhart made her first attempt at flying around the world in 1937, and this is where Americans died on December 7th. This is hallowed ground. Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor has asked the Navy to move the project further west and off Ford Island in order to preserve this scarred and sacred space.

Help preserve this American Battlefield with your vote to stop this atrocity. Tell the Navy to put the panels on ground that isn’t stained by the blood of Americans.

My grandfather worked for Pan American World Airways at Pearl Harbor. He was a 20 year retired Navy Vet when he was called back to active duty about 4 days before the attack. He manned the Pan American fire boat during the attack and later dove the wrecks during the search and salvage operations as he was one of the first Master Divers in the Navy. My mother was 10 years old during the attack and she tells me that she could see the goggles of the enemy pilots as they flew by their home in Pearl City.

I don't normally do petitions, but I am compelled to do this one.

Ditto to your sentiments and BOOOOO to the USN for their plan.

"...Navy now plans to cover the 300 foot x 4,000 foot runway with 60,000 black photovoltaic panels..."

Who cares about history when you can kneel at the altar of "Green Energy"?
If the Libtards are in charge much longer, we might see military cemetaries "repurposed" in much the same way - wind turbines in Arlington, perhaps...?

Personally, I don’t have a problem with using the land for something else, but not for solar panel farm subsidized by the government as a political payoff.

The PV array location is also will tend to blind aircraft in circling patterns and approaches to other airfields in the area, as well as destroy the historic vista. Inquire to see if an EIS or EA was performed and how these issues were addressed. Typically they are bureaucratically addressed to promote an alternative fuel source, without a rigorous economic analysis (they just cut and paste some interest rate table and call it an analysis). If properly questioned, they won’t be able to defend their position adequately.

Promoted to a couple of side-bars for a bit more coverage. FReepers will want to know about this, and get involved.

I had not known that the Ford Island Air Field was originally a USAAF air field.

I signed the petition, passed it on to all of my friends and Twitter followers, and will be calling my Congressman.

Also should contact Sen. Jeff Sessions about this — one of the few true patriots in the Senate and a member of the Armed Services Committee.

Wasn’t going sign until you enlightened me on what sort of idiotic use the USN was going to put it to. We can’t preserve every inch of every battlefield, but I’d rather see the field preserved than have some idiotic, Gaia worshipping BS inflicted on it.
Thanks!

Signed. I commented that if someone want the solar array so bad, to do it over on Waipio Peninsula. This is a large wasteland of Kaiwi thorn bushes, completely empty and unsused. Right across the channel from Ford island and no one would ever know the array was there.

wind turbines in Arlington, perhaps

Or, more efficiently, just harvest the energy from vets spinning in their graves from their discontent over how Americans are squandering and sacrificing their liberty and way of life on the alter of political correctness.

I learned how to fly, in part, using the Ford Island runway. It was available to us for Touch-and-goes. It has been a great benefit to local civil avaition operations out of both HNL and Wheeler AFB simply because it gives a way for light planes to stay away from the “heavy” traffic. They already closed the nearby Barber’s Point strip all of which leaves a bunch of traffic working out of one complex. Those solar panels ought to be on top of the island’s buildings which cover about the same area as the runway. The weather is harsh enough there so that rooftop panels would be a great benefit to building life, something the OICC ought to be mindful of.
