A man who was attacked with a knife after someone barreled into his parked car and then shot the aggressor apparently acted in self defense, police said Monday.
Santa Fe police say a 33-year-old man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup slammed into a parked car in the 100 block of Candelario Street at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday. The driver, who’s name was not released Monday morning, continued to the dead-end of the street, turned around and was confronted by the owner of the parked Nissan sedan, according to Sgt. Andrea Dobyns.
“He saw the red Tacoma trying to leave and told the driver he was going to call police,” Dobyns said.
The 67-year-old owner of the red Nissan sedan, which was totaled according to neighbors, heard the crash and went out to investigate like many of the other residents on the small street.
The driver stopped near where he had hit the car, according to Dobyns, got out of the truck and approached the older man. In the driver’s hand was a knife and he sliced at the man’s face, cutting him from his cheek to his ear, according to Dobyns.
The owner of the car was carrying a Glock handgun in his back pant pocket and pulled it after realizing he had been stabbed. Dobyns said the man fired a single shot into the driver’s abdomen.

That first sentence hurts my head.
at least he brought a gun to a knife fight.

Often, the first indication that a person being attacked with a knife has that a knife is present, is when they notice that they are bleeding.
Knife attacks tend to be very fast and very dynamic, not at all like in the movies.
I think the car owner with the Glock reacted pretty quickly, considering. One of the advantages of drawing and displaying a handgun early in an encounter, is to prevent attacks like this. Of course, if he never saw the knife (an oft quoted phrase in knife attacks is “I never saw the knife”) then he may not have believed that he had a reason to draw.
Self defense courses teach people to watch their opponents hands. “They kill you with what is in their hands, not their eyes.”
If you cannot see their hands, be extremely wary. It is common for criminals to block view of a weapon with the arm, body, clothing, or other object. It does not take much to conceal a longish blade up against the forearm.
This is why police are always demanding “show me your hands!”
I finished the CWP two weeks ago. According to the training, pulling a concealed hand gun before there is a threat is “brandishing” and is a crime in South Carolina.
Not just the first sentence.
An armed society is a polite society.
I am not familiar with SC law, so I cannot say if this is so or not. I have had many people who should know better make comments about "brandishing" that are contrary to fact and the law, and there can be ambiguity about what is allowed and what is not.
In order to stop some of the problems we were having in Arizona, where criminals were claiming they were "assaulted" by people who drew guns to protect themselves, we passed a "defensive display" law to allow display of the firearm without legal problems.
This was motivated, in part, by the fact that mere display of the firearm is enough to defuse the situation about 95% of the time. If you wait until you are on the ground, bleeding, or have your face slashed open, you will likely be forced to shoot. Defusing the situation is usually a more desired option.
Each situation is unique. Often there are subtle nuances to the law that allow more flexibility if you are aware of them. The more educated you are about the law, the more options you are likely to have.

When I was young and foolish, the following happened. I was with my girlfriend in my parked car, at night. Bam! Some car came from behind and bumped my car hard. Upset, I got out and confronted the driver, a black guy. Started yelling at him for his stupidity, grabbed him by his collar with one hand, and was about to deck him with my other. So his black girlfriend starts yelling at me to let him go, I turn around and see her shakily pointing a revolver at my face.
That certainly defused the situation! I let go of the guy, who smelled of alcohol and had been drinking, and told the gal no problem, I'm out of here. Both her hands were still shaking as she held the gun at me while I left. Next day, I'm in the area and the black gal sees me, says how ya doing, and I said fine, good morning. I had no complaint.
I see that lesson made quite an impression, and has stayed with you the rest of your life.
