I listened to the audio several times and it seems clear to me that Romney was talking about campaign strategy and was saying that he cant worry about 47% of the voters that are already committed to Obama.

But, everyone I hear discussing this is talking as if Romney said 47% of America has no desire to work or compete.

Did I get this wrong, or has the meaning and argument been switched?

You are not wrong. But the media and the obama campaign (aren’t they the same thing?) have cemented the belief that Romney said something he did not. Now the want him to defend himself.

I think Hannity had the best response for Romney if Obama drops the 47% line.

No. You’re right. We all got it. Even retirees with income are in that 47%. But just like Bill Clinton’s enduring 43% , they will never vote for Romney no matter what. That’s all Mitt meant. No matter what. That’s why I was afraid he would apologize. He didn’t say anything wrong.

Hopefully, Romney will reiterate this, tonight. He can simply say he was describing his electoral, but the edited tape was misleading. Wish he’d of said this to begin with, rather than offering a mea culpa.
