San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 18, 2012 | C.W. Nevius, Chronicle Columnist

There was a time when the far left wing of the Democratic Party in San Francisco stood for something. Sure, they could be shrill, exasperating and self-righteous, but they took a stand.

Their causes were clear - the homeless, the downtrodden, and those who didn't have a voice in big money politics. The truth is, as infuriating as they could be; those efforts were good for the city. They pushed everyone to think about the bigger issues: affordable housing, thoughtful development and, of course, more pot clubs.

That seems like another era. Now we see them booing women who work to stop domestic violence. They support candidates who their leaders know are deeply flawed.

The progressives need a wake-up call and a strong leader.

"Sure, they could be shrill, exasperating and self-righteous, but they took a stand."

I take a stand, too, when I have a bad case of diarrhea. Like leftism, it's runny, messy and has a nasty stink... and the best thing to do for it is prevent it from happening in the first place.

reduced to write-in.
it is better if ESty wins, because she cannot hold that seat long-term. Do we vote Esty?

I thought the S.F. Bay Area had Nancy Pelosi and Pete Stark for leaders. What's not to like about them?

yu are a man of few words, some days. But that John Pistone ballot has its appeal. I could pass a few hundred out and get a buncha-votes ... but got real elections going on.
