Obama's Hope Fades in Virginia

[SNIP]

Not long ago, this hopeful prospect might have seemed impossible for even the most optimistic Republican to imagine. As recently as Oct. 2,a Roanoke College poll reported President Obama leading by 8 points in Virginia, but in the past two weeks, the Old Dominion has shifted sharply toward the GOP challenger. Romney has led five of the seven most recent polls and, although the RCP average for Virginia still shows Obama with razor-thin lead, the Republicans here sense a strong enough momentum to carry them to victory on Nov.6...

........The Democrats are evidently shrinking their Electoral College map,in what looks like a defensive "triage" strategy to win just enough states to hold on to the White House. Team Obama already appears to have written off North Carolina, which the president narrowly won in 2008,....In a remarkable interview with National Journal's Major Garrett, top Obama strategist David Plouffe suggested that the Democrat is prepared to fall back to a last-ditch defense of just four battleground states--Ohio, Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire--that would provide enough of an Electoral College cushion for Obama to squeak past to re-election. That would mean ceding not only North Carolina but also Colorado, Florida, and Virginia to Romney, and might permit the Republican turnout operation to maximize its margins in those states without the battering "headwind" of Democrat attack ads. (Such ads, however, continue to run, and there is not yet any sign of a let-up in the Democrat ad blitz.)

However, with the final days of the election season now ticking away, the Romney campaign's momentum continues, and events in Virginia may yet have nationwide impact. The front page of Thursday's Washington Times features a story about how the Obama administration's "war on coal" has thwarted plans by the tiny Appalachian town of Grundy to expand its airport..................

My contacts in the VA. GOP tell me that Perkins is within 3 or 4 points of Connolly in VA-11. Perkins was given up for dead by the VA GOP months ago. VA-11 was gerrymandered to give the Democrats a 6+ majority over Republicans. Perkins and his campaign, without any infusion of funds, has put together a strong ground game. He has gotten his name out there by knocking on doors and an incredible amount of phone calls. This effort has gotten the attention of a number of super PACs and it looks like a plethora of funds are coming his way to take this district from the Democrats. The fact that Perkins is close to tying the incumbent is indicative of the tide turning against Obama towards Romney. A strong Romney win in this state with its coattail effect will probably be enough to carry Perkins and Allen to victory. In addition, I attended the Romney rally in Leesburg last night and the place was packed. I was told by a party official that the crowd size was between 12k and 14k. He also told me the crowd was easily 10 times large than the crowd Obama attracted to his last rally in the city. Now I have no way of verifying the statements, but they seem to indicate positive momentum for Romney and potentially all Republicans in Virginia.

I’d love to see PA called for Mitt. That will make for a much more relaxing Election night.

If PA gets called for Mitt, it will mean that Mitt will win in a landslide comparable to Reagan/Carter. If PA is won, it means it's over.

OK, he pardons everybody, resigns as Prez the day before the inauguration, Biden steps up as the new Prez and pardons Obama before Mitt takes the oath.

At this point I am pretty sure Mitt will win the popular vote. Sure hope he gets the right numbers in the right states.

Is anyone watching the Senate races? If the Dems are ceding this many states, just to shore up their last-ditch final stand states, are they also taking money out of their Senate races, too?
