The 10 Best Countries For Growing A Business [RANKED]
Business Insider ^ | 10/22/2012 | Max Nisen

Posted on 10/22/2012 2:10:09 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Management consulting firm Grant Thornton recently released a ranking of countries by how well they encourage "dynamic growth" for businesses.

We caught up with Stephen Chipman, CEO of Grant Thornton U.S., who says that "dynamism can be largely defined by a business' ability to act with speed, agility and flexibility. It’s about an organization's knack to move relatively fast in a productive manner, to grow, to take action without significant barriers — internal or external — getting in the way."

It's not all about the economy. A variety of factors went into the model, including the availability of private credit, the regulatory environment, and support for research and development.

Surprisingly, the U.S. is at the back of the pack. See who managed to beat us out.

10. The United States

Dynamism score: 64.1

Strongest area: The United States has the world's eighth-best financing environment.

While strong in many areas, the U.S. doesn't come out front in any. Polarized politics and sluggish growth are holding the country back.

9. Germany

Dynamism score: 64.8

Strongest area: Germany comes in ninth for science and technology.

A center of manufacturing, engineering, and organizational expertise, Germany has stayed strong through the Euro crisis.

8. Korea

Dynamism score: 64.9

Strongest area: Ranked fourth in science and technology Korea's large, vertically integrated conglomerates help it stay in front in terms of technological innovation.

7. Switzerland

Dynamism score: 64.1

Strongest area: Switzerland comes in fifth for science and technology.

High quality infrastructure and the presence of some of the world's leading engineering firms make Switzerland very appealing.

6. Australia

Dynamism score: 65.6

Strongest area: Australia comes in seventh for business operating environment, and labor and human capital Students in Australia and neighboring New Zealand spent more time being educated than any other country in the survey.

Surprisingly, the U.S. is at the back of the pack.

Not surprising to small business owners.

You can’t believe how easy it is. Their tax system is a half page form and you can pay with your credit card. Same for individuals or small businesses.

I find it interesting that a nation that was built on Zionist socialism (at least this is how contemporary historians see it), is a capitalist leader. Makes me wonder if the kibutz system has been exaggerated for its contribution to the building of the state of Israel.

Switzerland is also a nation where the majority of its citizens own a hand gund, and bases it national defense not on the promises of others, but by its own force of arms.

It’s pretty much like a Fairy Tale. Who would believe this is the most prosperous country in the world with almost no natural resources? They even import their fresh water from Malaysia.

I was introduced to kimchee at my company’s pot luck Christmas dinner last year, home made by co-worker who was originally from Korea. Good stuff as was the Korean BBQ beef he brought and the Indian lemon rice made by another co-worker who was originally from India. Those along with the more local and traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dishes made for a yummy if not varied meal.

I like going to the Amish farmers markets around here but truthfully, aside from the desserts, I find some of the PA Dutch main dishes fairly bland (although I should mention my mom was from PA and made an awesome chicken pot pie with hand rolled dough and it was awesome) and last Thanksgiving I learned from a co-worker how to make Pennsylvania Dutch Mashed Potato Filling although I improvised a bit and added some minced garlic and fresh herbs to my recipe.

I experience some “culture shock” shortly after moving here from Maryland and ordering a grilled chicken salad at a restaurant only to find that in all the grilled chicken salads around here, the chicken is smothered in melted cheese, and not even good cheese but yellow American cheese or Velveeta. ;( I learned when ordering a grilled chicken salad to say “hold the melted cheese please” and they look at me funny. : ),

The big thing around here, especially for community fairs and fund raising events is chicken BBQ. That’s some pretty good BBQ chicken but even that is a bit on the bland side IMO, but then I’m used to Maryland “Bull and Oyster Roasts” and steamed crabs. What I wouldn’t give for some good pit beef and fresh oysters on the half shell, Maryland steamed crabs. At least I’m still in driving distance.
